So I got this for $150. I'm selling the 350 V8, or shall we say, trading it for another D2.

OM617. Now i just need a turbo, and adapter for the 4hp22 transmission. Gas mileage and I'm going to tweak it to run on 15 psi of boost.

My understanding is that the OM617 won't work in the RRC...It will fit in a Defender...I don't have first hand knowledge of this but I emailed back and forth with Robert Davis who has developed a kit for installing the engine in Defenders and he said it just plain won't work in the RRC.

With that being said, I wish you the best of luck. I ended up going with an Isuzu 4JG2T and an R380 in my 93 LWB. I couldn't be happier! There is definitely more to it than a simple 300tdi swap but the power is substantially better. The only current issue I am having is that my alternator belt tensioner won't stay tight so I have to keep an eye on it. I've put several thousand on it and am totally sold on the conversion. Got my engine from Canada, conversion kit from the UK, and other bits and pieces from all over (alternator from the Domincan Republic, Turbo from New Zealand....)Isuzu diesel install.jpg

I don't know why it wouldn't work. I have a pattern to mate the 4HP22 to the OM617, it should be fairly easy to do the swap. wiring will be a snap.

The only thing that looks dodgy is the front sump oil pan, but it is steel, so that can be fixed with my welder.

I'll be following this thread in anticipation because it is a great option if you can make it work. Good luck

I hope so, because there isn't any going back now. I just need to unbolt the engine mounts, take off the hood, and unbolt the transmission, and the engine will be on its way out.

Anyone want to buy a 4.2 V8? Help me offset the cost of this build. LOL

Now you are doing my dream!!! This I will follow closely! It will fit into the RRC. Seen it done. Mercedes diesel and Rover platform = perfect!!

I have had a couple conversations with Robert about the OM617 in disco's and classics and forget what he said the issue was that he ran into. Read somewhere the optimum way to go is the bmw 524td torque converter and governor for the 4hp22 trans to match the torque and shift points but the v8 stuff will work. Robert makes a two part aluminum oil pan to clear the axle in a defender, I put about 40 miles on his om617 powered 110 and thought the the power was about the same as a 300tdi but with the mercedes fluid filled motor mounts the om617 was much smoother. Most om617's in discos etc I have seen end up installed on a slant to make them fit. Looking forward to this thread.

Making some progress today. I got the cylinder head off. Then cleaned it up. I also painted the engine block. Starting to look good. I also got the old range rover engine out. I sold the long block. Just need to clean up the engine bay and build the transmission adapter.
