Building a RTT Rack

How is your gas mileage with it on? Is it noticeably worse? I want to keep mine as low as possible but still be able to have my dogs move around under it. I was thinking of making it about 9" off of the bed rails.

This is a horrible drawing...

Basically, I just may be shooting for something like the all-pro rack but have it only sit 9" high... I just need to pull the trigger and get the steel. (.095" wall 1.5" tube???)

...And of course a roof top tent. :coffee:

It was a 1.5 mpg hit. You'll feel it on a windy day. The tube is 1.5" and unknown wall... though I bet you guessed it. How big are your dogs and how are you storing your gear?

Oh that's not the actual color of my truck, it's just a photoshop color i did real quick. I was going for an olive green FJ cruiser color, but obviously I failed. The only reason why I chose that picture to use is because it was the first good side view shot I could find in my photobucket.

My dogs are medium size, ~50 lbs... Knee high for me, but I am 6'3". One is a pit/lab mix, and the other is a purebred aussie. I think with 9" they should be able to move around under there. Especially because the aussie sleeps under our bed every night... It's pretty funny. Like clockwork, my fiance and I get in bed and within 5 minutes she walks into the room and starts scooting around and trying to get comfy under the bed.

As far as gear goes, not sure. Just coolers and stuff I would imagine. I'm more of a glamper than an expo guy. Actually, the reason for the RTT is because my fiance will be camping with me. If it wasn't for her coming along I would just sleep in my sleeping bag on a tarp like I always do. When it starts raining I just burrito in the tarp. It's the poor man's bivy. :ylsmoke:

On a side note, if that member doesn't want to buy it back, it will be up for sale sometime this summer.

Update: the original owner will be getting the rack back as of right now.

If anyone wants some pictures with measurements that look like they were done in crayon by a child... let me know by PM and I'll send you them. :D

You guys really need to talk to Kevin at ATO, he makes RTT racks for 2nd Gen Tacoma beds. Even runs one himself! PM him at fire931!

No worries, hope it works well for you. Just to clarify, the only reason I'm moving to a different setup is to accommodate my dogs. I would be sticking with this if I was traveling solo or just me and my wife.

Here's my bedrack. It's pretty simple. All built from 1" square tube with legs made from 2.5" square tube split in half (C channel now) and angle iron feet. I just kinda winged it with this one but it has worked out great. I use it for a RTT, and as two layer bed storage when the tent isn't being used.

I went a different way. I like to be able to see out the rear window with as little obstruction as possible, so mine goes above roof line and over the cab. Only to the 'B' pillar.

Side shot. Best side view I have at the moment.

Total length is 9 feet. No RTT yet, but works for canoe and more.
