Building Parnelli's JK

So, I'm building a new JK for Parnelli Jones. It has a plethora of parts from several manufacturers. Mostly friends and associates' products, such as:
Engel MT 45
Extreme Aire OBA
Walker Evans Suspension and 17"Bead Locks
PJ's Dirt Grip Tires 33"
Complete Rugged Radios Off-Road Race Package
Vision X L.E.D. off-road lights/rock lights/headlights
Bumpers/Rockers,Tire Carrier
Lowrance GPS
A Complete Banks Power Performance Kit
And the list goes on..

Now, I would like to state that this isn't being built with "overlanding" in mind per se. Although it is leaning that direction:smiley_drive: It will basically go from AZ to Cali and travel in-between from Moab to La Paz. It also must be able to carry 4 people at all times.

I'm fabricating several new parts for this JK. One item being a replacement plate that covers the factory holes left from removing the factory tire carrier. That plate incorporates a High Lift jack mount, CB/HAM radio mounts, back-up light, etc. Other items are: gauge and switch clusters, bolt in roll-cage "A" pillar supports, radio mounts, aluminum panel replacement for the factory lift panel in the back, and a Shelf System panel to replace the tailgate trim panel.

My current "fabricator's block" is where to mount the OBA?? There is no room underneath, and I'm trying to keep as much space as possible in the back. With the fridge and extraction gear , space is a premium. My idea is to just mount it between the rear pass seat and the factory sub woofer box. I have fashioned an aluminum box; kind of like a battery box. The box covers the entire pump and plumbing, both pneumatic and electric. It forms to the wheel-well and mounts flush to the top. Without pictures, ( will post some in the A.M.) what do you all think?

Just a thought...

There's a company called JeepSwag owned by Bret Woods (http://www.jeepswag.com/Woods Jeep JK Buying Page/index.htm), he has a tub replacement that is big enough to hold the compressor and a lot of recovery parts. However, you will have to replace the 30 gallon drum muffler that comes stock. Thats what I'm doing. I've replace the muffler and ordering the replacement tub, from my calculations it will hold the OBA, recovery straps, wrench rolls, air hose, etc. :smiley_drive:

:sombrero: Sounds enterprising, but the first thing to do is GET RID OF THAT STUPID BASS SPEAKER in the cargo srea

Then the OBA should be mounted in the engine bay for air circulation and battery/relays near

Mine mounts back of the brake master cyl, bkt from ARB

Also gets radiator fan air, when ops call

Where is the spare tire going, a 33" will fit in the stock position !!!

Sorry for the delay. I was working our booth at the Super Sand Show in Costa Mesa,CA this weekend.
It's pretty close to a fun job, when you're working, drinking beer, and the boss is buying!:sombrero:

Josh,
I have been wrestling with this problem as well, here are the places to consider:

1) There is plenty of space to mount it between the engine and radiator fan. A bracket could potentially be made and welded on the front cross member to mount the compressor to.
- Unfortunately I do not have the fabrication skills to pull this one off...

2) If you have relocated the evap canister out of the factory location, you could make a bracket and skip plate, similar to a evap canister skip plate and mount it in the factory evap location
- Unfortunately I do not have the fabrication skills to pull this one off...

3) If you have not relocated the evap canister, and have longer bumpstops on the rear, you could make a bracket the would tie into the rear cross member mount the compressor above the rear differential. Similar to the location of where people are relocating the evap canister to.
- I liked this location but since I do not have a lift on yet I was concerned I would run into clearance issues if the rear axle reaches full compression. Note: I believe the evap hangs down about 5". The extremeaire is about 6" if mounted on it's side.

4) Mount it inside on the rear wheel fender.
- This is where I am currently going to mount it. In process of building a box that conforms to the fender line that will contain the compressor.

The JK is on hold right now.
I've been bombarded with other "paying" projects.
2 long travel kits on Polaris Razrs, 1 with a turbo, 1 Yamaha Rhino long travel kit, and 1 Polaris Ranger suspension rebuild. On top of that, I'll tune all of the shock's valving and spring rates as part of the suspension upgrade.

I picked up the JK's lift kit from Walker Evans this weekend while in Cali.
I will probably be mounting the OBA between the grill and engine, until the Hemi conversion.:clapsmile
After meeting the people at Extreme Outback this weekend, I'll be abusing, I mean using their products exclusively.

I'm hoping to find the time to photo the JK interior torn apart and do a proper build thread. We shall see I suppose.

Here are a few pics.
1) Parnelli's JK with the Walker Evans Beadlocks and PJ's Dirt Grips in a 33x10x17r
2) A GPS/Radio Mount that is made out of 16ga cold rolled, TIG welded, and dimpled died.
3) This is a bed storage box made of .063 5052 aluminum. The box is available fully fixed or removable. It had lockable latches and the center is set up to accept the "new" jerry-can (NATO). It is powder coated in a textured black finish. This particular unit is on our mil-spec SXS line, and also rides in the Gila River Indian Reservation Ranger's SXS and Patrol vehicles.

This is the mil-spec set-up which is also going in the JK. It will be basically the same 4 person set.

Rugged Radio set-up with the Lowrance Baja programmable GPS

The Rugged Radio set-up. Race radio with programmable frequencies, passenger to passenger headset intercom, integrated with satellite radio and an I-pod hook-up.

Top notch work mate. The 4dr JK's are really taking their sweet time growing on me (I just DON'T like the looks of them for some reason :???: very odd cause I tend to be crazy about LWB Jeep Wrangler/CJ Varriants ) but this one is very cool. I'm impressed with your smart build ideas and I can't wait to see the final out come.

Cheers

Dave
