buying a new frame

ok guys, right now i have an 06 mongoose wing elite, very basic bike, but built very well, i am 6'5" 300lbs and i'm thinking about maybe getting a bigger bike, if possible, i ride mostly asphalt but do not want a full on road bike either

so i'm considering either a 29er, if i can find one for a good price, or maybe getting a larger frame,

if i were to buy a larger hardtail frame, say maybe a kona for example, just example, would i be able to swap my forks, wheels, shifters, crank, etc. onto the new frame or do i need to buy specific parts for said frame?

Obviously, going with a 29er frame is out of the question as it would require swapping out the wheels and fork. Even with a 26" wheeled frame, this isn't a very cost effective solution. Chances are, any frame you find will likely set you back a few hundred bucks. Factor in the likely need for a couple new components to finish the swap and a new complete bike starts looking pretty attractive.

I would imagine this frame swap project would easily set you back $300-400 with the end result being a "new" five year old bike. Or, for a couple hundred bucks more you can buy a brand new bike, even a 29er.

i found some good prices on some "new" old stock kona frames, $150-$200, anythoughts on a 29er as a pavement bike? i ride probly 80% asphalt and very little trails, but being i big guy i dont want to switch to a dedicated road cycle, would the 29er frame be bigger too, or do they just have bigger wheels and longer forks?

If you're set on getting a new frame, you're stuck with 26" wheels. The cost to swap to a 29er frame would exceed the cost of a nice entry level 29er complete bike.

I still think your best bet in the long run is to ride what you have, or buy a new bike.

if i were to go 29er i would buy a complete bike,

so my options would be complete 29er or bigger 26" frame,

my lil bro has a Schwinn hybrid with 700c wheels that i really like, and i think he only paid like $200 for it, i may look into something like that

those are nice, but they are way out of my price range, i may sound cheap, but i'd be looking at like $500 tops, i dont need anything extreme, mainly a quality derailleur

$500..... You should look for a good used bike on eBay or craigslist. I've seen some decent 29er HT go for less than $500 around me. ie, Raleigh XXIX, Redline D440, Fuji something.

But if I were in your shoes, I'd look into a cyclocross bike. Slap some 38's on there and have fun.
