Calling all Ford Rangers!

Wow... You even quoted the part where I specified the only model of Ranger to come with a 31 spline axle but argued the point anyway.

The only model of Ranger to come with a 31-spline 8.8 is the FX4, which is a late model variant. He's asking about an 03.

Sorry my reading comprehension isn't what it used to be... but it looked like you were implying that an 03 couldn't have 31 spline axles from the factory...only some type of "late model variant"

No, just that the likelyhood was very low, and that speaking in grander terms of Rangers, a 31-spline axle is a rarity. The FX4 package wasn't exceedingly common, and wasn't available for a very large portion of their production run.

Thanks guys, Im just itching for a 4x4 project not (necessarily for overlanding only) and I saw that ranger for 500 and was wondering the potential of the vehicle. The one im looking at is a XLT v6 4x4.

RedF...
Google: fourwheelcamper.com or allterraincamper.com , 4wc builds an Eagle model , the atc builds a bobcat model for , rangers,tacos, frontiers .
also, click on forum, top of this page and scroll down to pop up campers, there's about 80 pages of about every kind of rig imaginable.

Yes, as mentioned, the 8.8 is common, and splines don't matter for gears. Any 8.8 gearset will fit in any 8.8, if you have the smaller 7" diff, I believe your options are more limited.

4.10s on 31s is perfect, 4.56s for 33s, and 4.88s for 35s generally speaking for either of the v6 engines.

^ Yeah, living in the mountains, 4.10s is perfect for my 31"s but even if I was only stepping to 32"s I'd probably go up to 4.56s the extra grunt on the hills is nice.

Negative. Rangers use a 28-spline 8.8, with the exception of the later model FX4s which used a 31-spline like the fullsize/explorers/mustangs/everything-ever. 28-spline lockers are a fortune. So much so that it's cheaper for me to swap my axle to a 31-spline Exploder axle than to buy a locker for my 28-spline. There are a few out there, but unless you have an FX4, I wouldn't say there're lots.
.

That is not what I'm seeing...
All of these are within a few percent (lower or higher) of each other (more often than not they are the exact same price):

Plenty to pick from too (other than perhaps among the lunchbox variety). Most of the majors such as Detroit & ARB are represented in both spline counts.

I agree a SAS is probably unnecessary for 90-95% of the users on this site, however that leaves 5-10% that do infact have good reason for it (if I was sporting a '98 or later truck I would most certainly fall into that category myself).
Indeed it is something you cannot just bolt on. There has been occasional talk over the years of some company making a bolt-on SAS kit (I recall one does exist for '90s fullsize Chevy trucks), but so far nothing that I know of has ever materialized for '98+ Rangers.
I would suggest those seeking info for a SAS check out a Ranger-specific site such as www.therangerstation.com. You should be able to find most of what you're looking for there. ;)

Well then, don't I look silly.

I spent a considerable amount of time hunting for a 28 spline LSD and wasn't able to find anything other than spools, outrageously priced (in comparison) Yukons and recently the comparitively priced ARB, also spoke to IWE in Vancouver and they basically indicated the same.

I guess I wasn't looking hard enough. The 31-spline is still stronger, but good to know there are locker options for the 28-spline all the same.

Also, the SAS on a Ranger isn't really difficult in the grand scheme of axle swaps, but it's still not a minor undertaking.

Agreed on TRS. Good resource.

ETA: When you search by specifying Ford 8.8, 28-spline, Rear, you only get one option: ARB. Weird.

Yeah 4WP's website is screwed up (I could not bring up the TrueTrac for the 31-spl 8.8 at all whatsoever except by inputting Eaton's part# for the unit into the search box, then it came up).

Anyway, to get back on topic here... (curious why this is here and not in the Domestics section  )

My '94 XLT longbed. 4.0L V6, M5OD, and Atlas II 4.3 t-case, ARB up front, Detroit Locker out back (I bought the t-case just as I was starting to get more serious about the places I was going, but then decided I wanted a shorter wheelbase, which led to me buying the BII). This rig is more my DD since I got the BII, but I do still take it out occasionally.
Just put new shoes on it (33x12.50R15 Toyo Open Country M/T).

Imho, I hope people keep dissing rangers and stay with tacoma's and nissans , hopefully it'll help keep prices down on jy parts.

Yeah man, nice truck.

Interior space is the biggest reason to look at a Taco over a Ranger. It's the only reason I'm switching. I love my Ranger, but with a young family of 4 and a 95lb dog, it just doesn't have the space we need. I'm hoping to get a bunch of use out of it over the next year or so and then I'll have to put it up for sale. Baby is coming.

Thanks guys

Yeah, that was one of Ford's dumber ideas (refusing to sell the crew-cab Ranger here). Instead we got that Explorer Sport Trac thing with it's tiny 4.5' plastic box. Even though it's underpinnings were almost identical (the 1st-gen ones anyway), it just never had the same feel to it as a Ranger.
