Camburg VS Icon

Hello All,

I currently have a 2000 Tundra. I'm looking to upgrade the suspension, and I'm thinking of going to the Camburg 2.5 factory kit but looking at this forum and others I see a lot of people putting on Icon Shocks and or later switching back to Bilsteins 5100's and I was just wondering why before I soak around $3000 into suspension.

Thanks for the time guys.

I had it all on my 2000 Tundra. Spacers, Icons, 5100s, 5100s with OME 885 springs. Spacers, never again! Icons, always had a cluck sound and did not feel solid up front. Was great at speed, soaked up everything you can throw at them, but that's not what my off-roading is here in NorCal. If you live in the desert and hit high speeds then yes icons are what you want. If you do fire roads every now and then with some difficult stuff here and there then go with something cheaper and just as good: OME, 5100s, toytec boss kit. You can get a full kit OME for less than a set of Icons.

Today I just got my toytec boss kit for my sequoia. I'll install in a couple days and let you know. To me it seems like the best all around kit. I'll let you know!

I've got a 2005 DC 4x4 and put on Kings. I read a lot on ICONs since they are all the rage, but like Derek24 said, they are not valved for anything but open desert runs and honestly, their reliability isn't up to what I'd expect from such a high end performance shock - there are lots of stories of warranty replacements.

The kings on the other hand are valved to be more friendly to wheeling and moderate speed.

The selling point was when I had read several stories of ICON owners selling their kit and going to Kings and being happy.

Otherwise, the Toytec and OME stuff can work out, there are just so many variables there though! I'm not familiar with the camburg shocks, but if/when I need UCAs they've proven to be the best option out there and I'd not hesitate to have them outfit a truck.

Thanks for the feedback guys thats good to know.

I don't do a lot of desert stuff, but I do need that performance out of my rig. I need to be able to take a washboard road at around 50-60MPH, then be able to turn around and get on a jeep trail and be able to handle ruts, stumps, and rocks.

Does anyone have knowledge of a Camburg system, I don't see many people talking about them or returning them.

I know that when I did my Toytec BOSS kit this past summer I wanted to go with Camburg UCAs. Drew at Toytec mentioned that Camburg seemed to be having a lot of issues with customer responsiveness issues lately. He steered me to the Light Racing UCAs which have been totally fine so far.

The way you describe your application, the BOSS kit would be ideal for you.

My icons have been flawless on my 4runner. Handle everything I ask, and ride so nice on the road. No sounds, squeeks or clunks at all from them or my total chaos UCAs. Highly recommend, best money I've spent on the truck.

I have Camburg on my Taco, (which are rebadged Race Runners) Have roughly 250,000 miles on them...I rebuild them every 80K. A real persnickety person will rebuild them every 50K...that goes for all coil-overs of that type. They are going on 10 years old...maybe older...can't remember. I have had no problem getting parts for them.

Oh...like anything else, everyone one will have "their" brand they like, and will dis what they don't have...and spout out internet lure.

Only sure way to see if a product will work for you is to buy it and use it.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

Coil-overs will handle wash-board roads with ease at that speed...it is the rear leafs that will give you issues, even with quality springs and shocks. The rear will tend to skip out, keeping it in 4WD will help pull it through the corners. Unless you like to drift...keep that ******** in 2WD. :ylsmoke:

Thanks for the info, do you think a Deaver Leaf Springs Pack would be worth it then?

You're welcome

It depends what your needs are. It is the nature of a solid axle/leaf springs....with typical off the shelf components they'll act the same no matter the brand. You can cure it, but have to throw a bunch of money at it...and for your basic back country gear hauler...just deal with the skipping out on wash boards...or simply slow down.

I had a set of Deavers, they rode quite nice, however, I broke them...then fixed them, and broke them again, I drive like an old man just so you know...whatever the speed limit is, that is what I drive. Though I have read a ton of people not having any issues with them...maybe I got the beer:thirty build....(twice!)

For me I need real overload springs. I went with OME heavies...they were a little "too much" so I pulled one of the over loads...so I guess they are considered mediums now(?) They seem about right for medium loads. I have a 1 Ton utility trailer if I need to haul anything more than the Taco can handle.

Clutch, which model are those OME that you use?

Dakar HD's, with the longer of two the over-loads pulled. The shorter has the leaf guide riveted to it. I made separate shorter centerpins...(didn't want to cut down the original) just incase I want to toss that overload back in.

I tried pulling the add-a-leaf, so I could keep both over-loads...but that was waaaay too soft.

Not my picture, but you can see what I am referring to for the overloads.
