I love taking photos. My primary camera is a Canon 20D, and I have a 70-200 F2.8 L lens, 10-22mm, and my favorite 17-35mm F2.8 L MkII plus a Speedlite 540 to go with it. A good solid amateur set up, that I have used fairly effectively for the past 4 or 5 years.
My shutter curtain on the 20D is starting to have problems. A certain (variable) percentage of my images are coming out underexposed. I took it to Cannon's repair shop (which is convenient for me here in Irvine CA). They said this was a typical issue with 20D's after 100,000 cycles. Costs over $300 to get fixed.
This is extremely annoying. I simply don't have the money. I had to buy new tires, kids have school costs, work has cut pay, blah blah blah. No $300 frivolous income. And it's kinda galling to spend $300 on a camera body that is barely worth that much these days.
Cannon felt my pain, and offered me an Upgrade program, where I can get a 50D for $600. That's over half off retail price ($1400)!
But of course, given my current situation, that generous offer is just twisting the knife. I don't have $600 either. This sucks.
So I've been trying to decide what to do. I have considered selling my lenses to raise cash needed elsewhere, and maybe Getting a G11.
Have any of you used to shooting with a good SLR gone back to just using a PNS? Id be curious how its worked out for you. My wife has a G10, and I have discovered that its not a great trail camera. the time it takes to turn on, allow the lens to extend, and then be ready is too long. And it drains the battery something fierce to keep turning on and off. Dust is an issue also. I have found on many occasions later in the day on a dusty trail that the lens cover that sissors open, will stick, blocking 50% of the image! The G10 is a great camera, but not ideal for the sort of trail based photography I do.
sigh... I guess I'm just airing out my sour grapes. I'm frustrated.
