Camping/Kayak Trailer build

slider

yes it works really well, and i never have to concern myself with finessing the trailer around things. I finesse my jeep, and the trailer follows. I also have a skid plate on the tail to keep from snagging as well.

nice

Very Nice;; I would consider a 360 degree rotating lunette ring, (around $45 on line), and a slide in pintle hook, ( $75 to 150 on line ) Its never cool to be stuck in the outback, bush, desert, etc, with a twisted off ball receiver;;
Anyway, very nice job,, I wish I had your welding skills!

Thanks. Money is really tight right now but someday i hope to. Another corner i plan to cut is going to use treated plywood instead of steel.

here is my home fabbed axle slider, made of 1/4" 7075t6 aluminum. it is literally hung on the frame rail to allow for movement, and attatched to the axle using muffler clamps. I keep things painted with a DTM latex, sorry about the muffler clamp shot.

wait..

so you have this thing bolted to the frame, as well as the axle ?

How 'da hell does the axle articulate if it's bolted to the frame

seems flawed to me...

Ya realize the suspension does more then just move vertically up and down... on a straight axis. ?

That thing has got to limit axle movement... least how I see it.

tell me what I'm missing here ?

here's another fail...

i think he is saying the front bolts are not tight or even close. More like just a bolt through it with a jam not on the very end of the bolt sit it can slide or twist or anything it need to do. But it is not mine i am just guessin:ylsmoke:

Trailer axles articulate very little in the grand scheme of things. They move at the coupler more then anything.

Unless your out west dragging it through the bathtub anyway :)

Here in michigan I think both would be rather acceptable. Our trails that we can drive/camp on are rather flat.

hangars

Thanks guys,, I do a fair share of rock crawling here is PA, and lots of off camber, muddy, rocky wheelin, (as well as lots of forrest trails, and our long range excursions), You're right guys,, the slider plate is literally HUNG from the frame NOT bolted up fast... If the plate is unfastened from the axle, not only will it easily pivot to the ground, it will also compress flat up against the bottom of the trailer, (if the axle were to be removed). It also has a bit of lateral movement, not much, but I feel just enough to keep everything from binding up against itself. I considered using big barn door hinges, but decided against them as they would not have allowed for any off camber twisting, or lateral movement, here is a shot of the 1/4" galvanized hanger bolts.
