I found this trailer on Craigslist. It looks as they converted a 2010 Carson 5x8 utility trailer into an offroad trailer. He stated 4X8 in the add but in speaking with him he said the box area is 4.5X6.5 so it makes me think is was a 5X8 to begin with. I dont expect to do any real rock crawling but it looks as the tongue is made from C channel. are these durable trailers? As I am just learning about these types of trailers I am trying to get a feel as to what is a reasonable price and what is overpriced. If I would to purchase this I would want to add a lockable top and bigger tires that would include new fenders. From the CL add:

$2995.00

2010 Carson trailer custom....purchased new in 2012... 4 x 8 3500lb with pental eye has steel diamond floor and front shelf area with rear swing door and two fold out tables at each rear side also flipped axel has spare tire and rim and many outside tie downs and tool holders all lights working.....
Tent is ARB two man that raises up for higher camping..... have BBQ with propane tank....only been used a few times

I was looking to do a set up like this a few weeks ago; I already have a trailer that is lifted and has other "off raod" modifications but I stumbled upon a Rough Out Products (they are out of business) off road pop up camper i got instead.

It looks to me like he has it priced to break even on the build.. or come near it. he most likely has about 2500 rapped up in the cost of the trailer, tent, taxes/title, and metal work.

IMO as a someone that is some what new to off road camping trailers but old to craigslist if that is OBO i would think you could get him closer to 2K-2.2K to make it fair...

That being said, with my last few months or planning i have found you can pick up a military trailer for well under 1K and a tent for ~1K and be almost at the same point with a much tougher trailer.

Hope this helps....
I have also found the last few weeks that my estimate of how much it was going to cost to make me content with a trailer build keeps going up ... worse than a jeep i think ...:smiley_drive:

That is pretty sweet and not a bad price for the work that has gone into it.

Its ready to roll thats the good thing.
If you wanna put work into one then you could probably build one for less than what he is selling his for.

Idk where your located but I spotted a military trailer on cl in ohio for $300

I would snag it up ina heart beat if I had the money to modify into an adventure trailer.

Yeah I looked at those military trailers. I been seeing them on CL for around a grand around here. What I liked about this trailer was the high sides which I would have liked to put locked boxes. I was actually looking at building one from a 4x8 trailer "below was my design" as I was hopping to keeping it as thin as possible but still have the ability to use it as a utility trailer. 4x6 build COMPLETE skin 4 foot boxes.jpg

It looks like the tongue doesn't intersect with the trailer frame. At least, that's what it looks like to me based on the first photo. If that's the case, I don't know how comfortable I'd be with it.

that one for 600 is perfect. I would need to lengthen the tongue so I can add a front box. I like the fact it is square tubing and not C Channel. Now if I could only find that in Los Angeles, or somewhere a bit closer then across the country. : Not sure I am ready for that kind of road trip with a pregnant wife. Wow1:

I would go for the one thats already built. Its pretty sweet and ready to go! Also it has an arb tent and that is sweet in itself. I would see if you could talk him down to $2500 cash.

Personally I like the lighter (non-military) trailers for fire road type use as they are easier to tow and they should be plenty strong. You probably could source the parts for one at a bit above $2,000 if you have the time, watch for sales, and are willing to piece it all together. Or you could spend the extra $ and be ready to take a trip tomorrow.

One thing to definitely check out is the suspension though. A poor suspension can take all the fun out of a camping trip when towing the trailer becomes the focus instead of enjoying the scenery. It's tough to tell from the pictures but it looks like a leaf spring setup on this one?

Maybe offer him $2,000 or $2,500 and see how things go? Then use it for the season as you add on so it better fits your needs. If the tongue shows stress you could always have a local welding shop or community college weld some reinforce on.

not bad but there's been plenty of nice used M416's in the ExPO classifieds lately here
