Saw this on TTORA and copying here... little pricey but still nice to see it back on the market!

Dear Toyota Owner:

You had placed your name on Can-Back's call back list for updates on when the Can-Back for the 95-04 Tacoma or 85-94 Toyota Pickup would be available. Can-Back is now comfortable with their manufacturing process for these vehicles, and they are accepting pre-orders for the first production run. These have a target ship date of September 17.

In order to assure that there will be enough made for everyone who wants one, we are taking pre-orders until July 30th. The initial production quantity will be based upon the number of pre-orders received by this date.

There is no deposit required to place a pre-order, you will be charged in full when your top ships.

The standard Can-Back features are:

-Sunbrella SeaMark (vinyl-lined Sunbrella) Top Panel
-Sunbrella Side, Cab, and Tailgate Panels
-Gore-Tex Tenara Thread (will outlast the Sunbrella fabric)
-Smoke-tinted cab and tailgate panel windows
-Stainless Steel Hoop Structure (painted, structural steel frame will no longer be produced)
-Removable Tail rail (rear panel no longer snaps to top of tailgate)
-Black, Tan, or Grey canvas
-Two Mounting points for optional cross-bars or light bars (150 lb load rating on 2 bars, up to 4 bars may be mounted)

-Options:
-Side Panel Windows
-Cargo Cross bars to mount ladders, canoes, or jacks
-Light Bar to mount 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 lights
-Basket to carry luggage, gas cans (attaches to two cross bars)
-Spare Tire Carrier (attaches to two cross bars), 33"+ tire and Hi-Jack mount

I think for me the Can Back might be the way to go. I have always liked them but the lack of security and not knowing exactly how much weight the thing will bear puts a wet blanket on it. I have always like the covered wagon look of those things. I like the roll up sides. I can just picture my truck with a roof rack on the Can Back and a canoe up there. Oh that would be sweet. I want a shell on it but I just can't see one cak there all the time. That is why I went with the bed cover. The Can Back is just like a larger volume bed cover. Oh well, makes sense to me.

It's always nice to see other options out there, but I didn't realize these things were that pricey. By the time you add the side windows, the cross bars, and the roll-up kit, the price is right there with what I paid for my ARE fiberglass shell with side bay windows, Yakima rack, locks all around, and installation.

Then again, my ARE doesn't have roll up sides which would be very nice for accessibility.

Very cool. I have one of the original Can-Backs, it's a great piece. The changes they made address some of the standard gripes with original owners, now it'll be easier to roll the sides, and you can take the whole thing off without leaving a snap strip on the tailgate.

They're really, really nice...I traded my Snugtop for my Can-Back, I don't regret it.

I have an original can-back too and I had similar concerns. I addressed the security issue with a sleeping platform and a pop'n'lock. Of course, I only get to secure items that are under the platform, but I usually try not to pack much on top of the platform.

As far as weight capacity, they told me back in '03 that the frame was good for ~1000lbs. I personally have had a little over 300lbs (6 DH bikes) distributed over 3 crossbars with no complaints. It did have a bit of cowl shake at 70mph, but it was definitely still solid.

I think the can-back is great, it's still holding out all the weather after 4 years of camping in it. My only complaint is that the windows scratch too easily and the canvas is starting to fade. Hopefully they did something about that.

Thanks for the feedback. I read something about 150lb capacity with the stainless hoops, maybe that was an additional 150? I want to go this route and I am not going to get one with windows so that isn't an issue.

Yeah they keept lowering due to liability... I was talking to him about my Eezi-Awn ontop and he said it would be no problem.

I just called him and they said they are taking pre orders for a September deivery. I wonder how many people we could get to commit to that, I am about there myself.

I love mine, the new ones are even better, but super pricey in comparison to the best tops... It will be a rough market for them to compete in at their prices with the other brands in effect. Compared to a fiberglass top, the prices end up the same after you get everything you need.... YIKES!
