winch is mile marker sec8. if i mount it with the feet pointing down, the control box is too tall where i want to mount it. i guess i can move the box and make longer cables.

question is. can i mount it with the feet facing forward? it would be pulling from the “bottom” instead of the “front”.

is it safe to mount feet forward or should i just relocate the box?

As long as you keep the drum rotation the same you can mount it foot forward. You must still use all 4 mounting bolts. The gear box is also clock-able to put the clutch lever where you want it. I would mount the winch where it makes the most sense for access and strength. For solenoid box it should also be in a good spot, having to crawl is the mud to connect your controller or free-spool is not fun. Build it so its easy to use in the future.

It's arguably better because the mounting bolts are not exposed to shear (but I'm no engineer!). As long as the vertical part of the mounting bracket is as solid as the horzontal one it should be fine.
