Can T4R 5th gen TPMS go on trailer?

I was wondering if I got sensors that match my 2017 4Runner and installed them in my trailer tires, if the 4 runner would read them and monitor the trailer tires. Or do I need to buy a new 8 tire TPMS monitoring system?

Anyone have any experience with such a feeble attempt at saving $300?

It is likely capable of monitoring five tires. I haven't looked at a 5th gen, but in Techstream there are five slots for TPMS IDs for a GX470 (same as 4th gen).

The fifth tpms slot is for the spare tire. Not sure how the vehicle would act if a TPMS sensor was tied to the vehicle but not present such as driving the 4Runner without the trailer attached.

I have seen a lot of conversation here about the ECU only being able to read 4 TPMSs.
