Canon just announced its entry in the APS-C mirrorless category. With image stabilized 22mm prime lens and 18-55mm zoom, expect to pay about $1100 when the camera appears in stores in October. An adapter for EF and EF-S lenses will also be available.

Speaking to TechRadar, David Parry from Canon UK said, "Although there's no question that this is an EOS camera, it's targeted at people who are not traditionally an EOS camera.
It's for people who are interested in photography and want to take better images, but don't know, or don't want to know about shutter speeds, aperture and so on."

I think they missed the mark and the oly and panny M4/3 have much more options etc.. to offer and will wait and see how things are when they are out for a bit

I will defintely check this out. The option to increase sensor size a lot could make all the difference -- and APS-C is terrific in a camera this compact. It's almost the same case as my much-loved Canon Powershot SD870is. I've taken hundreds of images with that camera for every one I've taken with my Pentax K100D DSLR.

I'll take a compact camera everywhere. A DSLR only when on a mission.

I'll hold out for round 2, the new EOS-M reminds me too much of the overpriced and underperforming G1-X. I'm a die-hard Canon fan, but the recent silliness from them has me shooting Lumix these days.

I have used 1 series both the S and regular models all the way up through the 5 series also with a ton of L glass but am thinking of switching to Nikon since my style and what I am shooting has changed again most likely a 800E but I do love the wide T/S lens canon has ? so tough to decide
but am holding out on the GH3 before I get a OMD for my daily shooter which is now a old Pen that I love the output on for the size weight of not carrying heavy L glass and larger bodies around

I hear ya but to play other side so read with a smile as a fun counter point from a working pro who makes a living in photography the OMD from a few people I know had hands on with the new canon the files are not as good !!! scary huh
but I will wait for more reports and more release cameras before I count my chickens

I think the lack of fast lens options will keep it from replacing M4/3 for me and lack of controls etc.. I still like a few faster primes and 2 nice zoom options that are small and light

all APS-C cameras will take larger glass and create a heavier package which is why I went to the M4/3 in the first place than carrying even the smaller APS-C stuff which again was so close in size might as well carry a 5D body for sure not a 1 series body
glass ? again L glass is heavy regular stuff is OK from canon and can work but then again size

I can get two or three nice fast primes and two nice zooms in M4/3 and know I can go Panny or Oly for bodies and with cameras like the OMD get great files and have IBIS which can be really nice over having it just in the lens

so $800 aimed at P&S no built in flash ? and prime lens to start
this is more prosumer territory yet major lack of controls
and no tilt screen

its just a strange what the heck were they thinking !

if they made it a super manual and went after the Gx1 Nex 7 crowd they might have made more sense

while its cool I could use my current glass ? I can do that with other M4/3 and also other leica glass etc..
and again the idea was to get away from carrying big heavy stuff
and the M4/3 and APS-C are so close in quality with some M4/3 being better if I want to do quality gear my full frame stuff will come out along with large tripods etc..

gotta say its about time Cannon did this but imo its to high of a price point ($1100) and the touch screen TOTALLY kills it for me, mainly for one reason, these type of cameras inherantly make AWSOME dive cameras, HD video, interchangable DSLR quality lenses, SMALL package and HUGE LCD screen. it will be impossible to get a houseing for this camera with the touchscreen. to bad... guess i am stuck with my Nikon 1 series hehe :ylsmoke:

Tough crowd here!

The EOS-M appears to be an EOS Rebel T4i / EOS 650D in a substantially more compact package. It's literally half the size and weight of the dSLR model. We'll have to wait to see if the images and video produced by the EOS-M is really the same as the entry level dSLR, but it's likely that they will be.

I think the EOS-M will appeal to the photographer who owns high end Canon EF lenses, and wants a smaller, easier to carry camera body for casual shooting. Results from a point and shoot can be frustrating to someone used to a big dSLR. A bigger sensor and better glass promise better results.

There are millions of photographers who grew up using the point and shoot hold-at-arms-length approach to framing the exposure using the LCD. The EOS-M gives these folks a path to upgrade to better quality photos and video. I agree the price is high, but that can be adjusted.

I think many who have DSLR want lighter weight both glass and body
also want a EVF of some kind and want a tilt screen
I know on a paid pro forum I am on for photography most are also claiming major miss
the idea of high end glass owners mean they care some what or are rich
the fact of no viewfinder and no tilt screen and lack of controls is the downfall those with high end glass will want those features for the most part ! and most who own that glass also will want good auto focus which this seems to lack ?


that pdn article I linked to mentioned the t4i which means the OMD is going to beat it in quality and the other Pen and such are going to equal it while offering all the things that people might want ?

I know a lot of people that own the fujis and the pens and the oly setups and all seem to think its a flop

Leica M9 hahahh but then again many might decide to buy a used jeep instead the guys I know who have them love them though

I really think all the Panasonic and Olympus M4/3 are in running since they all have unique offerings

Its interesting this doesn't come with a small flash. My NEX-5N doesn't have a built-in flash either but does come with a very small flash that can be left on the camera all the time and is quite handy for dark pubs!
