Canon G11 - Impressions

'Li'l G' (what I'm calling my G11...), took her first spill today. I dropped it from about 3-4 feet onto carpet...the hard industrial carpet that has no pad.

Everything seems fine. (crosses fingers)

whoah ho, that sucks considering the G has some definite weight to it, hopefully you did dot drop it with the lens extended, otherwise it seems very solid and could take a hit like that, though i wouldn't recommend it :)

This thread is great.
I'm thinking about the G11 for my Girlfriend -

Am I correct that you can use the G10 lens adapters on the G11?

I have a question for those of you who are using the G11.

When I have looked at the camera in the store the grip feels uncomfortable. Mainly two problems exist, the camera does not feel secure in my hand and I hit (with my thumb/corner of my hand) all sorts of buttons accidentally. Has this been a problem for anybody, and how has it worked out in the long run?

Also, has each G generation had a slightly different body? Could I expect that the G12 will have the same body and just updated internals?

Thanks.

The bodies are always a little different, in each model.

Place your thumb high on the back side. There is a blank spot for your thumb, and a ridge to protect to only button in that corner.

Here is a pic with proper thumb placement (this is a G10 camera).

I have a G10, which is very similar in design to the G11, sans the articulating rear screen. Both my wife and I (wide range in hand sizes) find the camera comfortable to hold while shooting. We do not find the buttons to be under our thumb so to speak.

However, when extracting the camera from a pocket or purse, the exposure comp and ISO dials are frequently moved to undesirable positions. One quickly gets into the habit of checking the top of the camera to make sure the settings are appropriate. Its easy to do at a glance, and you can do it while turning the camera on so it does not noticably add to the time it takes to snap off a shot.

Regarding stablity of the hand grip position, as I said, good while shooting, but not very reassuring to carry around, say, when scrambling up a rock. A snug wrist strap is an excellent mod to this camera...one that I have yet to do!

This is pretty cool too:

So I can upload my pics with the G11 hooked up to the computer with a USB cable, but only through Lightroom. The computer doesn't see the camera, but LR does. It is a bit frustrating b/c I also want to upload some video I shot today.

I have had good luck copying the files from the card (card reader) to a folder (on computer). It has always been faster than running it through the USB cable.

Is there a reason you want to use the cable?

Yeah. My neighbor had my newer card-reader and my older card-reader couldn't handle the 4gb card.

I think that the camera should act as it's own card-reader in EVERY situation. You don't always have access to a card-reader.

Thanks for posting that question Mr Hadley. Got me off my butt and now I've ordered that OpTech Trio package

Wrist strap and finger cuff, pretty cool

Thanks for your answers. The G10's I have used always felt very secure in my hand, but for some reason the G11 in the store did not. Maybe due to the change in the back with the new screen. I hold the G11 in my hand and think that there is no way I want to be hanging over the side of a boat holding on to this thing. Maybe I just need a good wrist strap, or maybe I need to wait for the G12 and see if it fits my hand more like the G10 did.
