Canon just announced the G15, the latest in the G line, targeted at enthusiasts and pros looking for a smaller camera. The G15 features include

-- 12.1-megapixel 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor
-- DIGIC 5 processor
-- f/1.8-2.8 lens, optically image stabilized
-- 5X (28-140mm) wide zoom
-- 922K pixel, 3 inch LCD
-- optical viewfinder
-- RAW as well as JPEG shooting
-- 1080p video
-- body that's smaller and lighter than the two year old G12 (Canon skipped 13 and 14)

Price is expected to be about $500. Delivery starts in October.

just pre-ordered mine on amazon.

i had the canon g10 and really liked it. this one with the faster lens and refinements should make for an amazing, pocketable camera.

people are complaining about the loss of the articulated viewfinder; i applaud it. not necessary and the size savings are more than worth the trade off.

Sony RX100 set the new bar...no reason for any of these small sensor "enthusiast" cameras anymore.. G15 looked good in the pre-RX100 world

I disagree. The Sony RX100 seems to be a very good camera, but it lacks several features found in the G15. Thses include an optical viewfinder, a hot shoe for your choice of flash, a longer zoom that is faster (lower f-number) at the long end, and a price that is at least $150 less.

Disagree with the assertion that if Sony was able to pack in a 1" sensor into such a compact body, it essentially ushered in a new era of compact cameras with significantly larger sensors with not much larger body and optics?

nothing against the sony it is obviously a great camera, but the reason i am going to a g15 from a NEX-5 are the same reasons haven mentioned. i want it to be a go to travel kit that has the extensibility to run off camera flashes.

also, if you look a sensor size, the G1X should have the G15 beat. but early assessments say that doesn't necessarily pen out when you factor in things like glass, package size, etc.

The hot shoe is a must for me. After using a DSLR with a speedlight for bounce flash its hard to go without one.
