Canon G9

I'd be up for something like that if I can work the schedule out... I need to replace my digital camera now too... mine finally bit it. So now the debate... DSLR or a P&S like the G9.

I've had mine for about a week. So far, I love the Macro.

The macro feature works really well. Prior to sending my G9 back to be repaired, this was really the only thing that I felt worked "right".

After vacation in July, I sent my G9 back to the factory for service with 3 complaints: Noise at low ISO settings, a piece of debris inside the lens or on the sensor (shows up in the same place on every picture), and the lens cover would not always close properly.

I spent yesterday hiking/kayaking up in Prescott, and took the first pictures with it since it was returned to me. I have yet to download them to the PC....so we'll see if it works any better. I have my fingers crossed....I really want to like this camera....

I REALLY REALLY mean that

I hope we really really like it , too....and since you're the one that recommended it, if we don't we will probably hold you personally responsible for our plight, pain and suffering caused by yet another poc camera! So far you're in luck, we're still friends!:friday:

Power failure

Bumping an old thread. My trusty G9 has provided several years of good service and great pictures, but it dropped dead while I away on a trip this past weekend. No power from the on/off button, nothing from the Play button, and nada when you plug it in to a computer with the USB cable.

A search across the 'nets quickly identified a relatively common problem among the Canon G-series cameras (G7 and G9 in particular) where 1 or 2 screws can come loose inside the camera body and cause a short on the internals. When I turn the camera from left to right in my hand, I can hear the faint sounds of metal moving around inside the camera. :( Anyone else had this problem?

So it looks like a repair/replace is in order. I bought the G9 from a Circuit City location (no longer in business in Colorado), but it is way out of a 1 year warranty. So I'm thinking about finding a suitable repair location and having it fixed. Has anyone had good luck with an online repair vendor that you would recommend?

The Canon repair center in Irvine CA sees me on an all to regular basis, but has always performed well.... Up until my wife's G10 needed service. They wanted $300 for the repair (I can't recall exactly what it was for), but it sure wasn't a viable expense. See now uses a refurbished G11 that they sold her for.... Wait for it... $250.

So the moral is, call them, they often have refurbs to upgrade you with, and as a Canon customer, they give you good deals. Probably get a G12 now for half of retail. That articulating LCD is nice, as is the twin chip processor.

Hmmm - it looks like I never finished the story of my G9.

As I mentioned in fall of 2008, I sent it back for repair. When it came back, the lens cover problem was fixed, but there was still a ton of noise.

Not long after I got it back, something else went wrong - I don't recall what it was, but it required a second trip back to Canon to fix - still under warranty.

Not long after I got it back the 2nd time, the lens stopped retracting, it kicked up an error, and I shelved it after they told me I would have to pay for the repair this time.

I have heard from others that don't have any problems with their G9s, but mine was such an incredible POS, I haven't given Canon any $$$ since.

Conversely, my old 300D keeps on going . . . so I'm not totally jaded against Canon - just against their PnS cameras.

Yikes, definitely a bummer about your G9. I've been using mine for about 2.5 years now and haven't had any issues, but I'm a fairly light user and haven't been too hard on it.

Crossing my fingers and knocking on wood!
