Canon S3 IS vs S5 IS

So I am hearing up and downs with these cameras. Anyone have any input on them? I've read alot about both. I must admit. I choose the S5 IS based on the bigger LCD screen.

Well, the S3 IS is still a really good camera, hot shoe or not.

I found this you will be nicely pleased...assuming they hurry up and put the S6 IS out sooner than later. I plan on buying the S6 but since I just got the S5 IS like a month ago, I'll have to keep it a while learn it well, and wait for the S6 IS price to go down. Here's what I found.

The Canon S6 IS should be announced sometime in June and ready to ship sometime in the summer.

Specs:
Resolution: 10mp
Sensor: CCD
Zoom: 15x (28-420)
Flash shoe: Yes
Memory: SD
Battery: Dedicated Li-Ion
Screen: 2.5" articulating
Body: Rubberized gripping & lighter weight
Ergonomics: Jog wheel introduced
Image Type: RAW & Jpeg

This camera will NOT be a CMOS sensored camera. Look for Canon to put their CMOS P&S sensors in the G line first. That will upset a few.

Canon will announce this camera at the same time as the SX200. The G9 probably won't be announced until Photokina if Canon does 2 rounds of announcements. Rumors suggest Canon will do a P&S announcement and an SLR announcement on separate dates.

Other Products:
Look for Canon to announce a 430EX II as well as a 250EX. The 250EX will be for compact cameras... ideally the S6 IS and G10. It'll also work with previous cameras with flash shoes. It's about time.

Got any intel on the rumored 1000D? A part of me wishes I had the convenience, and instant-gratification of a P&S, but the interchangeable lens versatility of a DSLR.

EDIT: Sorry about going OT. The S6 specs are intriguing.

I thought cool, we can wait and upgrade to an s6 but then I saw they ruined it

"Battery: Dedicated Li-Ion" So now you have to buy a second propritary battery and an auto charger and pack those too, then every coupler years buy a new battery as the lithium ion wears out.

I actually considered that a selling-point. No justification other than personal preference, but I acknowledge the validity of your points. I don't think the battery change alone is enough to "ruin" the camera, however.

I consider that as selling point as well. I find my S5 IS to be annoying when I have to change the AA's and stuff. I'd pefer having the other type of battery.

If that bothers you grab the S5 IS?

Do you have the S3 or S5? Or no S series camera?. I got the impression by how you are talking...you have a S series.

We have the s3. I'm careful to make sure everything I have is AA powered, have over 50 sanyo eneloops now to power them all. The propritary lithium ion is just too much to keep up with. Imagine a couple of cameras, gps, two way radios, etc and the rats nest of chargers it would take if they all ran lithium ion, plus the $ spent in replacement and spare batteries. With AA based gear I only need the one little charger and all the spares are the same.

I understand very much what you are saying. I feel the same way, only, I the thought of the camera actually being lighter appeals to me.:jumping:

I bought a S-3 several years ago, the LCD screen burned out last year, turns out there was a recall on it, they sent me a refurbished S-5, love the camera, takes good shots.

Does anybody use theirs beyond simple point and shoot in the 'auto' format?

Tried any of the wide angle lenses offered? Just curious.

Nope no work on the S6.

I would go ahead and buy the S5 IS.

yeah i got the S5 a few days after i posted last. we reallly like it. it replaced an old nikon about 3 yrs old that was just a shirt pocket camera. this is so much better. i am by no means even an amatur photog so it has more features than i know what to do with. mostly just use the auto feature although i have played around with the "scene" funtions a bit. i got some cool fireworks shots on the 24th of july.

That's cool. I'm no photog myself.
It does have a lot of features.
I tend to use P Mode and I pick the ISO setting. If you notice..ISO 400 or above, is REALLY grainy.
