"what do you mean im not supposed to change my own fluid?" i asked the service tech.
"yeah its a seled system, not even a dipstick, and only the dealer should do it." he replied.
wow he must think im a dipstick. i get thats its a seled tranny but i can still drain and fill right? has anyone done this yet? it should be an A340e tranny i think and should use jws3309 fluid. is this right.this is on a 07 auto. well thank you anyway

WELCOME TO EXPO !!!

If your talking about a new Tacoma - the tranny is uber crafty - and the fluid and the system to change it are in deed a dealer only item. I am ok with letting them do that one service - I can do everything else, and the tranny is super spendy to replace - so a dealer service history is preferable.

If it bears any relation here, my Audi A6 Quattro has a sealed transmission, no dipstick, and no real way to verify fluid level. Problem is that the volume of fluid needed is not stated in standard volume, i.e., 8 pints or whatever. It has to be filled to a witness mark with fluid at a specified temperature. I think it has to be around 195 degrees or the volume comes out wrong. Why it could not have been adjusted for expansion, I don't know.

It still sounds stupid to me even after having the car for 8 years to have to fill the transmission hot, but I am simply not equipped to heat transmission fluid and then fill the transmission with hot oil. No thanks. I let the dealer do this one.

I just went through this with my wifes Jetta $375 to do a tranny service at the dealer. Non of the local tranny shops could do it because they did not have the special fittings.

Reason #4,722 to have a manual transmission.... :D
Regarding the Toyota, perhaps. As for Quattro, there is no substitute, and the potential hassle is worth it. 213,700 miles and counting, with no failures, no repairs, and no issues from the transmission, center diff, or front or rear diffs, and it is the most intuitively correct all wheel drive system I have ever used. Too bad they don't put this drive system in a real off road vehicle.

Better to have them do it. Check out Toyotanation.com in the tacoma forum because there was a good thread on this pretty recently.
