Canter differential cross reference help?

Hi,

I'm hoping someone in the know on Canter's can help...

I've heard through various sources that...
1) the Mitsubishi Canter uses a 9.5" rear differential ring gear.
2) it may be the same larger ring gear that was used in the 94-00 Montero 01-04 Sports w/ the 3.5L engine.
3) a 5.29:1 ring and pinion ratio is available for the 9.5" gear.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case or help put me in contact with someone who might be able to help with this?

If it's confirm-able, I'd be one of the first in line (among many) who would be willing to buy a set of 5.29:1 gear sets from the Canter for use in my Montero.

TIA.

sorry man, crazy day... looked back through all my fuso notes and have nothing about the specs on the FE/FG ring gears.

Hey . Not sure exactly myself either but I was sure it was way bigger than 9.5". So anyway I went down to my mates workshop cause he's got heaps of Canter stuff everywhere, half a dozen diffs anyway and I thought he'd know for sure. Not something that ever gets swapped around so we put a tape over a couple of them. Close enough to 12 inch for the 649 and the current 84 (similar to the 140) and 11" for the old 637. They look huge up close. Very thick through the ring gear.

I always thought the little front ring gear was the same as the Pajero / Montero.

Wow. I was just told tonight on another forum that they offered a light duty version and a medium duty version of the Canter. The medium duty for example is all we received in the US but they did offer the light duty version in other countries. The light duty one is the one reputed for having the smaller ring gears. :Wow1:

I'm not sure if Australia got them or not (maybe your friend knows?). If you did get them and the one you measured is from an LD version, then I guess that's the end of this possibility however if it's a MD version, then I guess I may need to continue the search. Thanks for any additional insight you or anyone else can offer.:smiley_drive:

dammit, that is huge... a Dana 80 (Dodge 3500/Ford F350 size trucks) only has 11.25" ring gear and can be rated upto 11,500 pounds (GAWR).

The Dana S110 has 11.8" ring gear and is rated at 14,000 pounds (05+) and the Dana S130 has a 12.25" ring gear and is rated at 16,000 pounds.

Those are massive axles for such a small truck..

offroad, just swap a 60 under your Montero and be done man, :D

I've not heard this before and I doubt it for the FG. Maybe they are confused with the FE. As I said, the older models run a slightly a smaller diff but they are still huge, compared to say an F truck. Now you see why the diffs / axles / bearings aren't a worry when you go to SRW.

Hey John, I seem to remember something about these canter axle & Diff housings being good for up to 8t, the rear Diff I think is the same one used for the canter Tipper.

Hi Chocko, Yeah. Sounds right. On the same topic. We spoke to one of Isuzu's engineers last year who said they were trying to develop an 8 ton NPS. It's been on the table for along time but the only holdup now was the front diff. I imagine Fuso are in exactly the same boat. Virtually all the components were from the NPS 300. So that ties in with what you're saying. Sure , the brakes and springs would be bigger but the 300 engine, box, driveline would all handle 8ton without issues. Most of that's in the 10ton altready.

So guess that would be a NPS450. Wow. How good would that be for a bus? Or a maxi FG for that matter? Ahh would that be a FI or FJ?????
