Canter not starting

Hi
I have a Fuso canter FG 84 the motor will not start by key just turns over
If I spray start fluid in the inl
et it starts and runs good
Just had a new injector pump and injectors fitted still no start by key
Any idea

Have you been messing with any electrics recently?
If it is like my OKA, if the fuel shut off solenoid is connected to the wrong ignition supply it will crank but not run until cranking is stopped. With the start fluid it starts and runs without diesel for a very short time.
Cheers,
Peter

Does it have a grid heater or glow plugs?
May not be getting high enough temperature to ignite on a cold engine. You could do a compression test and valve clearance check too.
Does it start by key after it's been running and the engine is hot?

How long are you cranking for? Electric fuel pump, or mechanical? If you just had injectors and pump changed you could have a small air leak causing the fuel to drain back to tank and requiring longer cranking time to prime the system each time if it's mechanical.

Be careful using ether on a glow plug engine. It can do serious damage. Check to make sure glow plugs are working and crack a nut at an injector to make sure it is getting fuel. How many miles in the engine? What is the exact history on this problem? Did it only start happening after IP replacement?

Will not start even hot just happened all of a sudden while driving
Motor cut out
250k on the motor
Changed pump they thought it was that

I’d check for fuel at the injectors. My guess is a problem with one of the stop systems—either the electric or manual, unless the lift pump just failed.

Hi Gary,

Go have a cup of tea and restart the diagnosis.

Sounds like a fuel issue, an airlock or picking up air somewhere. Bleed/prime the whole system from tank to injectors.
Also check the mechanical lift pump on the side of the pump, replace the check valves and small springs, I had this issue, truck would not start, kept it running by hand pumping the primer. Serviced lift pump, problem solved.

Not stating the obvious, as you have changed the pump, pump timing? Just a thought?

Hope this helps.

Will not start Hot or cold
Can crank over til batteries are flat
Mechanical pump

Lift pump is near the tank all good
Drives good once started
Had the pump and injectors fitted thought that was the problem timing All good

Have you confirmed operation of glow plugs? Digital voltmeter in 12 volt outlet should drop just after turning key on then jump up about 20 seconds later after relay clicks off.
