Kind of a sobering blip from the article. Perhaps some missing context.

" After activating an emergency beacon, it took four hours for a maritime safety plane sent from Melbourne, to find the family and relay home the good news "

All speculation......
Maybe because any fixed wing aircraft in the local area would be unable to take off due to wet and soft runways although I expect there would have been a local mustering chopper or 2 around and maybe one at the local gas facility a couple of hundred kms away, but they might have taken a lot longer to organise.
In addition, that particular aircraft would be fully equipped for the task and crewed by experienced people. And it was probably just sitting there.
They dropped a sat phone and extra water when they arrived overhead. They would have talked via UHF radio that the family would have had in the truck.

If you look closely at the video that those pics were taken from they are actually not on the track but were driving parallel to it which they tell you never to do because the track even though covered in water is more solid than the ground around it.
They apparently have enough supplies for at least two weeks and more. Supplies could easily be dropped if needed. If the rain stays away for a week it should be dry enough for a light vehicle to go in and rescue them.

More info....
The registration process for PLBs and EPIRBs in Australia is mandatory and allows a lot of information to be included including travel plans, photos of the vehicle and emergency contacts. The authorities would have called those emergency contacts, so they knew EXACTLY who they were dealing with long before they arrived. So while a PLB or EPIRB is a simple one way communication devise it can be and is a very cheap and effective tool.
This would have also contributed to the time it took to get the search aircraft to them.
I note on another report that the first emergency drop from the aircraft included DVDs, sweets, nappies and a letter from the grandfather of the kids.
