I've always wondered about building your own and designing one to your own needs. Good luck, I'm very interested in how this turns out:)

One quick one, based on the sounds of it you're likely a mid 20s couple a few years into working? Before you go building this rig, which is minimal for 2, I'd step back and see what your (and the GF) are thinking in terms of kids (or lack of) in the next few years. It'd be a shame to put something together and potentially out grow it in the near future. I know I wasn't really thinking of those considerations a couple years ago. :)

Exactly, I started a rebuild that has stalled due to requirements-which are fine for me and the missus, my set up is probably going to only be used for myself on fishing and hunting excursions as it will be tight with 2 adults, 5yr old(toys, etc) a dog and down right miserable once the 2nd kid arrives.

Also.... watch your material costs it adds up fast and you can easily put yourself in the range of some nice used units that are easily modified to your requirements.

same here, had to redo my plans when I determined that just couldn't fit all of us in the space of a truck bed. Went to thee cab over for more room.

Agreed with some of the coments made. That setup would have been fine for me and the wife back in college but make sure you keep the longer range in mind. It would suck to put so much work into something that you'll only get a couple years out of.

We bought our truck camper when we had one kid and now we have 2. I think it will still work but have yet to try it out (she's only 2 months old). I'm already making plans for a tag along offroad trailer for the extra space and gear hauling. The trailer has future plans of a tent incorporated in the lid with the thought of the kids sleeping out in it someday.
