For that last advantage, a tank that operates horizontally is best.

Forklift tanks come in aluminum 43# easy to convert to the ACME type consumer valve for vapour usage as outlined above.

Mower bottles are a smaller alternative.

Some have enough ports you can also keep the liquid flow valve for decanting / transfer.

Please elaborate on the mower bottles as this is the first time I've heard of it!! Thx.

Our Four Wheel Camper comes with 2 10-pound tanks. In 4 years of travel I've never had an issue finding a spot to get them re-filled. with one always in use, it's not too difficult to keep an eye out while traveling to make a quick pit-stop to get the other filled. I also have an AT Overland external 10-pound tank holder I can install on the jack bracket if I need to bring a 3rd along for some reason.

There's a new kind of "spun aluminum" bottles I spotted, very cheap but need to get a standard Type 1 QCC ACME/FPOL vapor service/liquid fill valve **with OPD** fitted and tested.

I never saw these before so more research needed,

portable DOT type needs periodic recertification, but mounted ASME style as in RVs and autogas, does not

It amazes me that people don’t understand you can get the exchange bottles refilled.....

Most all of the exchange places don’t care what bottle you are turning in. I exchanged a tank that was shot up ?

Imo the only reason not to use the 20lb is space

** I had a Toyota powered rock crawler that ran on propane and used forklift tanks .... I lost money on that because I bought one of those clear fiberglass tanks, it was nice though but the company lost their dot cert

Yes 40# or even better 100# are much more space efficient, and horizontal give better pressure in the cold.

ASME mounted type do not need recertification.

Very easy to decant between the different size bottles yourself for convenient portability.
