Cast iron question

Thanks! I do that out of years of habit and trial and error anyway. Definitely works until I get too much heat.

Can’t seem to make eggs work that way though. ☹️

You can sand the pan smooth if you like but its not necessary. The finish isn't what keeps it from sticking, the seasoniing is.

FYI on used cast iron - I read this years ago as a warning, some fisherman use cast iron to melt lead to make tackle - you can never remove all the lead and it leeches into what you are cooking... just a warning.

I used cast iron while camping for decades, and have half a dozen different Lodge and Butterpat pieces, but I put it all away a couple of years ago when technology simply bypassed any need to cook with cast iron while camping. I did keep using my 8" Lodge cast iron pan for bacon for a year or so, but have since retired that as well.
Now using induction cooktop with solar powered onboard battery bank, the new non-stick induction friendly pots and pans render cast iron a camping relic of the past.

There is a romance to cast iron and I get that, but while overlanding/camping when your clean-up options are limited, and storage of hot, heavy, dirty pots and pans is a pain, I decided it was time to move on.
Side bonus is that eggs never stick to the pan, cook perfectly with full control of the heat, and slide off the pan right onto my toast!
