CB for 100 Series

Hello Everyone,

I thought I would ask what folks have done for a CB in their 100s, or any truck for that matter. I would like to see if anyone has come up with a dash mount unit that works. I put a small unit in a Tuffy center console in my 40, with an external speaker, and thought perhaps using the space of the ashtray to do the same in the 100. Am I smoken weed with Willie here, or has anyone had any luck? Any hand helds up to the task? Brands and models would be cool too.

You might do well with a Cobra C75-WXST, which is a remote mounting unit.

Some of the smaller units such as the Uniden might fit in the ashtray location (I am not too familar with the 100, but it works perfectly in my Taco). I mounted a Uniden Pro 520XL CB radio in the ash tray location. It was very easy to make flush, and seems like a lot of others have problems making it flush. First, I removed the 2 screws that hold the ash tray slide out and cut the rear out with my dremel tool. To make it flush I used a heat gun and a screwdriver to make a small indentation on the air duct. I heated the duct up for about 20 seconds and pressed the area in with the back of screwdriver where the 90* coax elbow would hit. You only have to press it in about 1/4 of an inch. I used an 90* coax elbow to connect the Lil' Wil antenna coax to the CB. I them used 3M double sided mounting tape to secure it in place (it is a tight enough squeeze it really is not needed, but I wanted to be safe for future washboard roads).

• Full 40 Channel Operation

• RF Gain
• PA/CB Switch
• ANL Switch
• Compact Size 4 1/2" W x 1 1/2" H x 6 1/2" D

I know that Doron and John both use the Cobra 75 in their 100's. Mine did eventually have a problem with the PTT button (failed), but for over 6 years it worked great.

Paul, I didn't know people still sold CBs anymore? I though everyone switched to GMRS mobiles or went Ham a lont time ago!!?? j/k

When I must employ the CB, I have a modified Midland unit that plugs & plays into the side slots in the door.

Well, I had a pretty good string and soup can thing going for a while, then one day I lagged behind to far and the string broke.

I've been extremely pleased with the Cobra 75 setup in my Tacoma (and soon to be in my 40 too).

The nice thing is it doesn't take too much real estate on the dash. In fact it takes just a couple screws and a ~1/2" hole. If your super scared about putting a hole in the dash, you can route it under some plastic (in between carpet and dash).

Another option is to route it into the glovebox, so you open the glove box, plug in your radio and then shut the glovebox door (it has enough room for the cord).

My Cobra 75 power/antenna/handset connection unit is mounted above and to the right of my accellerator. The CB antenna is on my ARB Sahara Bar. The handset mounts to my dirver's side console (via the typical bracket) right in front of the seat. Works well.

That does sound like a pretty good set up. I was thinking either there or running it all into the center console lower compartment. I could leave the whole thing in there full time and pull it out and close the lid when needed. I like the external speaker idea as well.

I have the same bumper and was wondering if reception/transmission would be acceptable from a mount on there. Did you go with one of the factory holes on the top surface or something fixed to the nudge bar? 3' or 4' whip? How's the reception?

Everyone tells me I'm loud and clear? I could not use the bumper hole from ARB. I didn't want to use a solder terminal underneath. (To use a molded cable the light's in the way)

So, we drilled a hole more toward the side and away from the built-in lights. Works great.

Oh....and my Firestick is a 3-footer. Rarely hits the trees.

Paul, get a trunk-lip mount. It can be afixed to the Hundy's rear top gate and provide you superior RF ground plane (or drill a hole in the roof )

I have the WX75 in the mog, you cannot hear it with its built in speaker but it's great with the external speaker. I got the noise cancelling version of the external speaker because its the only one they had in stock, I have no idea if it is any better than a none noise canceling model. If you get the cobra external speakers they are quite big and can be tricky to mount, if you want an external speaker you may do better with a smaller third party model.

My speaker and the small base unit is currently mounted to a piece of plywood while my headliner is being redone. Its paired with a roof mounted wilson 1000 whip antenna and it seems to work great.

In general its a great little CB for tight places.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the input. I pulled the trigger on one of the Cobra 75 WX ST. Sounds more like a Suburu than a radio. Anyway, it should be here soon. The antenna thing is the next hurdle. Great suggestions. I post what happens sometime soon.
