CBI Swingout Lock Fix

I was not overly happy with the Swingout lock open set up. The set screw is never going to be able to keep the cap in place with the five feet of leverage you have at the end of the Swingout. Not mention once you tighten the set screw you are going bugger up the post, then try to slip the Swingout off if you need to. So I modified the cap with an extra bracket. It also seem to reduce the movement of the Swingout when driveing.

Intresting, I've never had any issues with mine. Worst part for me living in the PNW is keeping it lubed through 9 months of wet. Every fall I remove my swing out and grease it well.

Interesting that your swingout not have a double-shear bracket/brace already. It looks like you have a 2nd-gen Tacoma as best as I can tell from the pic. I thought all the CBI Tacoma bumpers were already set up in double-shear (like the pic below from their website)? But I agree with you, if there wasn't a double-shear bracket there, if you had all the weight of a spare wheel/tire, gas can (or two), and a Hi-Lift, you would probably get a significant amount of deflection when the swingout was opened up.

I never even installed a set screw on mine, and honestly never even thought about it being there to hold the cap in place since the bracket is already securely bolted to the raised portion above the taillight (i.e. it's not going anywhere, and if it is, a set screw isn't going to stop it). I've been meaning to get a set screw to install in that hole just to prevent it from being another place for dirt to enter the spindle/bushing area. I actually use that set screw hole as an oiling port on mine (when I talked to Nathan he recommended 3-in-1 oil for the hinge).

I think a BEFORE shot may be needed here... Mine looks like the photo posted above... Were you just missing a part, perhaps?

That double shear set up looks like it is what I should have gotten. It is a 2nd gen and the bumper was just purchased from CBI in December. I can,t understand why they would go to the set up on my bumper.... This is what it was before the reworked bracket.

Thank you for bringing up this concern. I'm guessing you have the Trail Rider 2.0 rear bumper since it does not have the double shear top. The solution you have come up with is great! What we normally recommend is to drill a stop in the spindle once you have it set where you want and then put the set screw in so that it holds the top under pressure from the swing arm. If you have any questions please give us a call!
