Cheap Bright Utility Lights.

It being an aircraft lamp means that the beam is made to throw a very long distance..which is good when you're landing from 200 feet above the ground..but I think better low-altitude lighting could be had with the same approach but different lamp choice?

I'm a wildlife biologist, we have run these 4509 bulbs in a ShoMe corp spotlight for years doing nightime surveys. Also used them extensively with the pictured housings for driving lights. Very happy with their performance, longevity is somewhat limited, stuff gets behind the bulbs in the rubber housings pretty easily and causes problems.

Those rubber housing are pretty cheap. Usually sold as tractor lights. I spent some time and money trying out bulb for flood lights. I found some really nice ones. Don't remember the numbers off the top of my head but I'll go pop the bulbs and look if anyones interested.

GE rates the 4509 at 25hrs:Wow1:

25 hours if you are lucky.
Looks about like the sealed 100w landing lights that used to be in the helicopter I flew. The are small and produce a ton of heat. They also don't handle shock and vibration well, so they burn up quick. I used to only run them when I was cruising (115+mph) for airflow, and they still burn up crazy fast. Also the beam is very narrow. They are relatively cheap though I guess, if you don't mind replacing them a lot...

I used to run them all the time in the EB and they seemed to last a good while, of course I didn't run them on all the time, well esp. after a 3 AM run down the road with them on and hitting a State Highway Patrol along the road while he was trying to sleep, he didn't like them at all, said he NEVER saw anything so bright , thought it was a UFO coming at him!!:Wow1:

did this mod on my TJ about 4 years ago, but they only lasted about 3 months, i ended up putting the stock bulbs back in and using them for backup lights on 2 rear bumper i built for friends.
