Cheap but decent scan tool?

Looking for recommendations on a decent enough scanner that's relatively cheaper than the GAP IID. I would probably not even use 90% of what the GAP can do, so is there something in between that and a low end $20 deal from Autozone that is a good all-rounder?

So...the GAP tool is not just an OBDII reader, it is also a programmer, typically for modern Rovers. It specifically allows you to mess about with all the many sensors on something like an LR3, like the suspension settings. However, if you just want a cheap scanner, they are plentiful. Some are plug in and are powered by the car when plugged in. Some are apps that run off your phone or tablet, and require a bluetooth or wifi based "dongle" that plugs into the OBDII port and transmit to the app on your device. A good example of that is JScan (Chrysler/Jeep/Ram specific) or Torque (android only).
Autel is a very reputable brand for OBDII scanners, and they range from $35 to $7000. I gave this one to my daughter and its served her well on a Subaru, Mitsubishi Montero, and Honda CRV
Looks like Autel has an app version with dongle also, but I have no experience with this.
Just a warning, some systems will have capability, like ABS functionality, but you have to "unlock" the capability with a paid subscription (ie, extra $$). So read the fine print.

Thanks, totally understand what you get with the GAP. I know lots of people will say just get it, but I wouldn't use its full capabilities. Something along the lines of what Foxwell etc. offer for half or less than what the GAP costs is what I'm looking at.

Your choice obviously, but you might be viewing this through the wrong lens. It's sorta like a gun. you never need it, until you do. The GAP tool could save you a LOT of money if you ended up needing just one of its special functions. If I still had an LR3, I would absolutely have one. No question, no hesitation, no doubt.

I have both the XTool Anyscan A30M and the iCarsoft LR V3.0 for my 2017 L494 Range Rover Sport. While the iCarsoft is technically a Land Rover specific device, mine is slow and buggy. The XTool has been everything I need on the daily basis for normal code reading, servicing, live values and module resets. Both are in the $150 range.

I have recently ordered the Gap IIDtool G4 on a black Friday special as I am looking for some customization to the vehicle that other units can not do (height calibration and CCF edits).
