CHEAP trailer/sleeping arrangement ?'s

I'm going to work on a trailer setup this winter. I've got several ideas I'd like to work into the setup, but I don't know what to do for a tent.

A RTT is out of the budget....I'll need the trailer to carry "stuff" when taking the entire family. Because of that and the size of our family I can't see setting up any kind of sleeping area 'IN' the trailer.

At this point I'm thinking a ground tent to sleep in, and the trailer for extras is the way to go.

Unless of course I can get some other ideas.

FWIW I'd even be open to having a custom RTT built as I have a perfect material for it, and a few of the Amish shops local to here are VERY reasonable. But I would have to work out the self erecting frame work.

It's funny we have a ground tent, and a hard side expanding camping but even for ground tenting with this setup I think we will need to buy more equipment. Our ground tent is fine for base camping, but is too HUGE for finding a open spot out in nowhere. So I'm thinking two smaller tents for the boys, and for the wife/me.

just throwing it out there...

here's an idea I had, rolled over in my mind, for my M100 build.
(before I ran across a killer deal on an RTT.)

I was thinking of using a canvas cover over some metal frame work.
Creating a higher ceiling height... while trying to keep weight overhead to a minimum, and in an attempt to maintain the lowest COG possible.
Then I would've fab'd up and installed fold down cots to the driver and passenger sides.
sorta like the old WWII military gurney's

Only thing that turns me off about this...
ya can't really secure your property.

but might beat sleeping in a ground tent ?

I'm actually OK with sleeping in a ground tent....The biggest reason why a roof top tent mounted to the trailer would be nice is the lack of ground space needed. I wouldn't need space for a truck/trailer/tent, just a truck/trailer.

For now, I'm going to concentrate on a trailer, and incorporate some of the ideas I've seen on here.

What about some of the guys here who have beefed up regular pop up trailers? Most of those would sleep four pretty easily, and perhaps mods could be made to haul more gear?

I'm thinking about adapting a normal cabin style tent, and using it as a RTT. I'm going to try and find one off craigslist. Something old and cheap, then work out a cheap prototype to work out some of my ideas. If things work like I think I'll buy a new tent, and build an aluminum folding platform and I really think it could turn out nice.
