If you can get your finger over the spark plug hole with the spark plug removed you can feel if there is compression. However, you can't measure it. A compression tester is fairly cheap and at least in the US, you can use teh tool loaner program at a major auto parts chain to "rent" one. However, you don't mention which vehicle you have and some engines have difficult access to the spark plugs.
You can listen for 1 or 2 cylinders that are weak on compression. On a weak cylinder (low compression) the engine will turn faster while turning the engine over with the starter.
