Chemex Coffee Maker

We've used many methods to brew coffee from boiled "cowboy" coffee on a campfire to higher end kitchen systems. We've recently started using what is my favorite - the Chemex® coffee maker. Link to website: http://www.chemexcoffeemaker.com/

It is a "pour through" style consisting of a chemistry lab looking hourglass shaped container plus Chemex brand filters. What impresses me is that you can make the coffee quite strong without bitterness. I assume this is a function of (a) Chemex filters, and (b) the fact that the water is just below the boiling point when it contacts the coffee.

Being glass it may not be practical for overlanding, but it makes great coffee at home.

LOVE Chemex coffee. We just got one for our wedding and brew that way every day we're off work and have the time. Amazing coffee, for sure, but like you said, the glass might not be the most practical for off road.
And while I do enjoy some coffee while on a trip, I'm all about practicality and ease, so I have a single brew coffee maker plugged into my inverter.

Love the Chemex too.
I am all for slow coffee, but I too leave my setup at home :coffee:

This is a wonderful marvel of physics. It heats the water, which expands into the upper container. The water sits for just long enough to extract from the grind, then the vacuum pressure from the lower container forces the water back through the filter -- clean -- and ready for consumption. It's a very Nikola Tesla-like device. I have yet to have coffee out of one... But I did see several while I was in China.

There are reported cases of un-intended consequences resulting from transporting laboratory glassware from USA into Mexico.....I dunno, I'll try it here but not take it anywhere.

GSI outdoors has a reasonably decent pour thru setup more suitable for overlanding.

-The 50oz older version that I have uses the silicone funnel from the 30oz, not sure if that is still the case.

I might give some Chemex filters a try in it, and see how it goes. When I used regular paper filters with it, I still had to use the provided fabric filter under it, else the coffee wouldn't drip.

Also wondered about the gsi collapsible drip ? Might try it for a super compact system
Last trip picked up a aeropress also got a metal disc from the same company that makes the Kone for chemex a bit nicer than paper in the aeropress but ended up using paper camping instead of my usual mypressi which is awesome for portable
Aeropress is nicer than my French press since grind is less critical and prefer flavor over the French press

Kinda that balance of flavor vs pack size durability :) sometimes camping don't mind coffee vs espresso gives me something to drink a bit longer on cool mornings
My thing is want less water waste cleanup camping and easier also kinda want to make more than one serving at a time

Thought about bringing hario drip since it's plastic and do the stir style vs straight pour some like to get a bit more out of it

Should get a chemex for home to go along with my Elektra A3 which I can't bring camping :)
