Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 first drive reviews

The other factor is why buy new? If the 9yr old used trucks that are 3/4 the price of a new on get the same mileage?

My Subaru gets 23-24mpg around town, no trailer or bikes up top we typically see 28-31 on road trips and with our camp trailer 21-22 add bikes up too we get knocked to 18mpg. The new Canyon is pretty close on interior quality to the Subaru and yes the diesel bests the Subaru on mileage. Add that the truck gains 4x4 capability over the Subaru has better load hauling ability. Etc etc. it's a very attractive replacement option.

We just did 2700 mile trip in our Sequoia 4.7L towing our 4x6. 16mpg average across NV and ID, 20-21mpg Around YellowStone / Grand Tetons and 15mpg on the way home against a head wind. Only reason we took the Sequoia was I could pack all our gear easily into the back of the truck vs bins on the trailer I would have had to remove at two hotel stays. A diesel Canyon would have easily done 30mpg + on that trip and accommodated gear under a locked cap.

The main reason we went new was primarily the safety aspect. My wife driving our two kiddos around in the winter up here in the Upper Peninsula, an old Outback was going to be a losing proposition in 90% of the vehicles that could be involved since everyone drives full size trucks. We also got 10k off the retail so it was hard to pass up and supporting a company that brought a mid size diesel to the states was in my eyes worthwhile.

Always loved UP. I have had one of the best hikes up there.
In tow weeks or so I'll be moving back to NYC area, but I'll always remember Ann Arbor and UP. :D

How does your tuck behave in snow or icy roads?
Does the traction control work good?

Have ever needed H4?

It was a bit of joke, (even before all the computer wizardry) crack open a repair manual...lots of individual complex systems that are supposed to work together just to get you down the road....for the love that is all holy...please don't make them more complex....oh too late! ;)

As I am trying to decipher why my cruise control quit working, something shorted causing the brake light fuse to blow...which I am assuming caused the cruise to send a fault code in the system. Already replaced the brake and clutch switch...still no worky. So now I have figure out where in the DLC3 I need to run a jumper a wire so I can get the fault code for the CC, as nothing comes up on the OBDII scan gauge. According to the FSM...do the jumper wire, then count how many blinks the CC light does to get the correct error code. I am not much of an electrical guy, so....has me scratching my head...

Your CC stopped working, because the thing's had it dragging that truck over 300k miles! I'd have thrown in the towel long ago :D

I will say I don't use cruise much, or at all. Better FE that way, and I'm a control freak

Ha! I figured it out....after chasing almost every possible lead...the new brake switch... had it just ever so slightly out of adjustment. On the way in to work today, I tried lifting the brake pedal with my foot...sure enough! Yous gots to be kidding me! Have been fusing with it on and off for a week now.

Oh...I have knack for getting speeding tickets (almost had my license suspended for a 2nd time a couple few years ago) , refer to it as my "speeding" control, just set it right at the whatever the speed limit is to keep me out of trouble. Everyone pretty much hates me from the glares I get on the interstate...hey, I am driving like an old man for reason!

Probably should stay away from those high powered trucks ya'll like...and stick with sloooow Yodas....I can't keep my foot out of it. Why I sold my muscle cars all those years ago, and starting buying the painfully slow Land of the Rising Sun trucks.

Check trailer plug harness and or brake light bulbs for a short. I've seen bulbs with scrambled filaments blow fuses. Also had a rental trailer blow my fuse also. After that it starts to get complicated. A friend picked up a brand new Miata on auction dead dash with piles of dealer notes. After an hour eyeing the electrical diagram he targeted the reverse micro switch. Bingo bad micro switch. Drove it for a yr zero issues then sold it to a neighbor

I recently replaced the trailer wiring module on the truck, must of touch something causing the fuse to blow, which is odd it all worked when I checked it after I was done, then again I forgot to put dielectric grease on the connectors and took it appart to do that, and didn't recheck the lights...soooo anyways... replaced the fuse, new bulbs for good measure...still no cruise. So I replaced the brake and clutch switch...still nothing, as I said above, was getting ready to replace the steering wheel stalk ($180)...discovered today I had the brake switch ever so slightly out of adjustment. All better...man, don't know how much you use something until its' gone. I keep on saying I want a super basic truck with little amenities.....yeah right.... I am full crap.. ;) :D

I bet lots of modern cars get sent to Auction due to a $2 micro switch these days. Pretty amazing how a little cheap switch can screw up a whole system.

I think the new tundra surely will have another decent engine option besides the 5.7 if they want to compete with the other makes. Not sure if that's a hybrid, diesel, or turbo. The turbos aren't really fuel efficient so who knows.

Tundras are low volume vehicles. Even back in 2007 when they hot stuff, they didn't sell well. The target market still wants domestic brands. So I don't expect Toyota to spend a lot of money on it. Which is fine with me, they are cheap and reliable.

I think mpg is fine. I get over 18mpg on any long trip around where I live. The engine seemed more responsive than the Ford and GM trucks I drove, which may be the reason for the mpg difference.

It's a lost opportunity for Toyota. Those Tundra's are pretty damn reliable and provide decent torque. MPG's suck, but that is to be expected for a v8 gasoline engine. They just haven't done a lot to update the vehicle (other than looks) or allow for different options. If they just threw in the 5.0 Cummins V8 as an option, they might see an uptick in sales.

Cheap? No truck is cheap right now. But if you get down to it, any of the domestic "work trucks" are cheapest. On the upper trim levels, the pricing is about the same, but Tundra is left far behind in tech/design/ergo.

Reliability is anther thing. I really don't see the Tundra being much (or any) more reliable than the Big 3. Sedans, compact cars, where they put most of their money, are great, reliable vehicles. Tundra's have had their issues (cams/crankshaft, Evap). It's a segment they don't care much about, obviously, and it shows.

I'd assume if they went diesel route, it would be like Ram or Ford--something like a 3.0. If they went bigger, that's 3/4 ton territory, which I'm sure they don't even want to venture into.

Yeah the cummins V8 is a turd in power and economy for what it is. It would be one thing to lack one, but its not great at either one. I'm not sure why anyone picks it over the gas V8 in the Nissan.

Not sure why anyone would pick a Nissan period, but that's for another thread. :D
