Chilton's or Haynes repair manual for 1997 Montero?

Factory service manual not as helpful? Think about that statement for a moment. I agree the Haynes/Chilton are useful, but only to an extent. They usually cover a wide range of similar models and don't always account for changes/updates within a generation or model year. I personally like having both, but a factory service manual is essentially a bible for your car. Any auto parts store that carries those manual can order the one you want, or try ebay and Amazon.

I don't see a 1997 FSM at mitsubishilinks...any idea if the 1998 would be the same?

So far the auto-parts stores cannot order a Chilton's or Haynes manual as they are unavailable, I think Chilton's is available online but I'd like a hard copy. No luck on Amazon or Ebay either (for the 1997). The hardcover FSM on Amazon is probably where I'll start.

Probably a good idea, and as Eric M noted, they are the same-ish. Close enough anyway. Like I said, they'll cover most everything but not pertaining to your exact model and trim.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
FSMs are best, i find things like incorrect specs and "assemble this part in the order you took it apart" to be a bit of a nuisance especially since i usually buy cars other people have given up on or completely disassembled a bunch of years ago to fix something simple. So factory parts breakdowns are a good thing to have, 1997 is a weird year for Monteros and a '98 manual will be your closest bet. For the most part things will be the same like your engine and drivetrain but the interior changed a bit and so did the body. '96 had a different engine.

One of the Haynes manuals that Az Crew shared had a picture of some completely different car on some of the pages. Oh, and one or both of the aftermarket manuals had the wrong firing order for the Montero so we'd get a rash of guys posting on 4x4wire "Help! truck barely runs after tune up!"

I got the sense that the 97 was a bit odd but I'm glad to have that confirmed, I thought my search skills were the problem... The FSM is in the mail, hopefully worth the $75 I paid for the hard copy.
