Actually, not so in my case. My XJ has been pretty much as reliable as any Japanese car I have owned - more so than the Subarus actually. Maybe not quite Honda reliable. The only time I've been stuck on the side of the road was due to neglect on my part.

The one thing that has failed in a disappointing manner is the headlight switch. Why the circuits are not relayed I have no idea. Sign of AMC cheapness and time of design I guess. Oh well.

220k kms and still runs strong. Did the overheating injector TSB when it reared its head but otherwise been rock solid. And I have a 0331 cylinder head. I better go knock on some wood.

I am another one of the many that does not want to see Jeep close it's doors along with Chrysler. i think there is alot of behind the scenes info we may never know.

I would just like to know that if my business gets into trouble will the government step in and bail me out.....? i dont think so. i have been responsible enough to plan for slow and or difficult times. granted a multi million or billion dollar industry is a little more difficult to run than a small business but the basics of business are the same. will canadian tax payers give me money to pay my employees medical and dental...no. i dont have a solution, there is alot of money and jobs at stake. losing chrysler/jeep (or any of the auto manufacturers) would be a terrible thing. when things this large happen there are strong feelings on both sides of the equation. i just hope they reach a solution that doesnt cost canadians in general alot of money but in turn doesnt cost the employees alot either.....is that too much to ask???

I hate that government is subsidising this as well. I guess I can see the point of it. Better to pay off these companies and keep the workers working instead of all these workers hitting the social assistance queues all at once.

With the money going to the companies the outlay of cash by the government is gradual and deferred over time as opposed to all at once to the workers directly with no hope of getting them off the dole.

What are you going to do with a 50-something year old guy that has been making $40/hr to put lug nuts on a car on an assembly line for the last 20 some odd years? Maybe my idea of what these guys do is outdated but you get my point.

It bugs me in the case of Chrysler/Cerberus though. GM will attempt to regroup and manufacture cars. It's what they do. Cerberus could give a rat's MMM about car manufacturing. When conditions merit selling off to make a profit for the big wigs they'll dump it. Whether or not that means Chrysler remains viable as a car manufacturer is irrelevant to them.

We can only hope that if Chrysler dies Jeep gets spun off. This way they're not tied to Dodge and the aweful cars that they're forced to make that are based off of dodge cars...

Had this idea come to me on the 11 hour drive down to the Overland Expo this weekend.

What if we could somehow get Jeep spun off to AEV. They pretty much do the design of anything useful Jeep has lately anyway.

For funding, Wondering if we could set it up like REI, some sort of customer owned co-op.

Don't want to argue about there being a bit of a premium on AEV stuff, but considering the business I expect there to be.

hard to compare the J8 to a normal JK though as far as production costs. They are being hand assembled in Detroit from what I think are parts sourced from the Egypt plant.

From what I could gather they are expecting to be able to assemble 40 of them per round in a 6-9 month time frame.

This would be VERY different with access to the Toledo JK assembly lines and some normal Jeep assembly workers.

I'd just like to see them picked up by someone that has a good business sense, which I believe Dave @ AEV does and a passion for Jeeps.

I for one hope they dont go belly up or loose any of the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep. My job would be down the river. I do hope that some wise decisions are made so these problems wont arise again for a long time
