2) No, this isn't legal for US import.

3) If we are talking the petrol v8 motor (pick any version) and usual US asking prices... I agree with him.
 
I have side lined the sale for now due to family medical issues, just not a priority right now.

Sorry to offend the defenders. I actually love them, but read my email to a craiglist responder. It's all how you look at things.

Sorry to offend you, but the British are not known for their engineering when it comes to vehicles. I love Defenders, might even own one if I had millions of dollars.
As for the the video link, come on; two euro hillbillies driving up a dirt mound! Was it the same driver ? Was the G in low range? Were the lockers on (obviously not)... Wait thats not fair the defender doesn't even come with lockers.
I didn't attack the capability of a land rover defender just the price and value/reliability in north America. I converse with many Defender owners on Expedition Portal and even they are aware of the reliability down fall of their vehicles.

Just as my Mercedes is to a Land cruiser my g is to your defender, price paid - value. Will a Land Cruiser get the job done? Yes but is as well built as G... NO! But hell it costs $10,000 less so maybe it's worth it. Just like my G is $30000 less than a Defender and worth it.
Its all how you look at it.
So yes a defender is overpriced in north America and don't even compare the engine to one of the most proven reliable engines in the world, the OM617.

I was totally kidding about being miffed. I know full well the good and the bad, the tried and the true. I appreciate each rig for its attributes. I'm just thankful that my 110 has treated me as well as it has - runs like a top (shouldn't type that out loud, should I?).

Nothin' but a G thang, right? :elkgrin:

So would Chuck D drive a Defender and Warren G drive a Gwagen? Would Mike D drive a Defender? Nevermind...

Actually, it is possible, I started looking into it as soon as I saw this thread. Here's a good overview;

The EPA only cares if it's younger than 21 years old, unless it's on their list of 'identical' cars. This one isn't on the EPA list, but it's over 21 years old (or will be within the next few months depending on the actual date of manufacture);

The DOT only cares if it's younger than 25 years, and doesn't conform to safety standards. It's not old enough to be exempt, but it is on the nhtsa list of approved vehicles, meaning it does conform to safety standards;

Certainly isn't easy, but it looks like it can be done. In any case, if it's not for sale anymore I guess it doesn't matter.

Several months back there was a SWB G for sale in CA. It was a rare beast with all the bells and whistles. The thing that made it most appealing was that it had been federalized at great expense by a previous owner. It may be easier in other states, but in CA, you would never be able to legally register a grey market vehicle without going through many thousands of dollars of expense.

Over 25 years old is no issue, outside of California, which is a whole other issue.

There are plenty of G's already here that are just as nice and sometimes come up for sale anyway.
