CL Missoula, MT -- FlipPac for Dakota

Wow, this is really weird...
About a week ago I decided I am going to sell my Durango and get a crew cab Dakota, more versatile and I really like the Daks and want to have a p/u with a true bed again.
I was thinking about the various ways I could use the Dak for camping/exploring vs. my current Durango and thought of the Flip-pac option. A bit pricey for a new one, ($4000.00) but maybe in a couple of years...

Now you post this ad, and I'm going to email the seller before I've even bought the truck that it goes on. lol
Montana is a 6-7 hour drive directly south of me, it's the shortest drive to any of the U.S. states for me. hahaha

Thank-you for posting this ad!!

EDIT: I just mapquested Missoula, it's more like an 11-hour drive from my place, but I could still get down there and back home within a weekend.

You had better jump on it. Since I posted it here, I saw a google feed from u-ship of somebody who was trying to get a shipping bid to get that thing from Missoula to Virginia. Then I called the seller again thinking I might buy a Dakota (rather than wait around for a Flip Pac for my T100 to materialize) and buy his for $975. He said there si some guy in Idaho who might really be interested. It's about time; he's had that thing for sale for three years!!!

I emailed him right after I posted, and he said something similar.
"A guy coming in a few days might get it."
I don't even have a Dak yet, could be a month or more before I sell my Durango and find a good Dakota that I'm happy with.

I've made the mistake of rushing in on a purchase in the past, I'll try and be patient this time. ;)

Yep, guilty as charged. It'll do me nicely on my little forays into wild trout country.

(The trip back yesterday over Chief Joseph Pass-Hwy 93-was a bit of an adventure in itself. 60 mph crosswinds between Missoula and Hamilton; blizzard-type conditions near the summit; and jack-knifed trailers on the descent made for a interesting trip.)

Congrats on the purchase. I spoke to Dennison about that Flip pac. Seemed like a real nice guy. I can only imagine you had a good buying experience, return trip notwithstanding.

Did you see it here or did you see it on CL?

It was a good experience. The seller is a fine fellow, and he did not misrepresent the unit. It is, indeed, as he described it.

I received a 'heads-up' from a friend, who also reads ExpoPortal frequently, who told me the Flip-Pac in Missoula was back on CL and with a lower price. Judging from the date of your posting, it's a strong possibility that he saw your post and alerted me.

I had been looking for something akin to the FlipPac after I purchased a Dakota last fall, but had given up the chase and settled on a 'return to the basics' by purchasing a simple shell (SnugTop Sportsman).

Then when I received the e-mail about the Missoula FlipPac, I sent the CL seller an e-mail (April 1) and subsequently after Seller and I spoke a couple of times via telephone I looked for a weather window to go north. I phoned him the a.m. of April 7 to make sure that he still had the unit, and, when he confirmed that he did, Diana and I left within a few minutes.

It was interesting to me (us) that through all the e-mails and telephone calls the seller never mentioned about any other interest in the camper. It was only after the fact—the camper was secured on the rails of our Dakota—that he told me about a fellow in CA with a T-100, another in New Orleans who was looking for a shipping method, and yet a third party who had phoned him that morning. Talk about low-key selling!

I now can see via this thread who two of those persons must have been. I really hope that I didn't crush anyone's hopes. There's no doubt that this was a good purchase. It's arrived in a good home. There are a few ExpoPortal members who, I think, will vouch for that.

I have no plans, other than fix the couple of broken items (which the seller had explained beforehand), to make any major changes to the unit. It's fine the way it is. We already have gobs of camping 'stuff' that we've accumulated over the fifty years of our lives together. There's even one item, a Coleman lantern, that predates our marriage.

We look forward to using it soon.

P.S. 'billybee', we lived for over 40 years in Los Olivos, not far from you. For 20 of those years I was on the faculty of Midland School.

If you have the ext. cab T100, this Flip Pac will fit...

Congrats Allen! I know you'll put it to good use. Love the story of the weather on the way home. Glad I'm not the only one that happens to. Springtime in the Rockies...

Congrats on the purchase.
When do we get to see pics of it mounted up? :D

I spoke with "D" at FRP on Friday. She assured me that the plastic tips of the struts would be mailed to me that afternoon. In the spirit of good faith, I sent a check to cover the parts and S/H right after I spoke with her, so we'll see.

Anyway, as soon as I receive those, I'll open the tent and take a couple of photos. Right now Flipper is mounted to the rails with only 'C' clamps...not good, in my opinion. I must decide whether I want to have this shell bolted down (recommended) or if I want to be able to remove it occasionally. The sturdy clamps I use for the other shell do not fit over the ledges of Flipper.

Parts arrived today (Monday, 4/12/10), just as promised.

Hey Allen:

Can you describe the clamps you used? I am going to Hanford (Central Valley) to fetch one that is too long for my T100. I am just using the T100 to transport it. Ultimately, I will be selling the T100; so, I don't want to drill through the bed rails while I am trying to sell the truck. So, clamps would work fine to transport the thing home...132 miles.

Any information you can provide would be helpful...

TIA,
bb

PS: I have been through your neck of the woods, too. Ridden my motorcycle through Idaho Falls and SE along the Snake river towards Wyoming. Part of a really fun x-country m/c trip I took with my wife about 7 years ago. Stay the night in Cokeville. (My wife would have preferred if it were Diet Cokeville.)

Did you use 10 of them? Seems like they would work themselves loose. I'm gonna be on pins and needles driving this thing home...

Put a wooden slat under each clamp, on top of the flip-pak ledge. The soft wood will help keep the clamps snug, and will spread out the load a bit. 1/4 inch thick is plenty. Check them after the first 20 minutes or so then you should be good to go.
