clunking sound

Oh, how I hate making a post like this...

When I shift from Park to Drive there is a clunking action going on. It happens again when I come to a complete stop. Never at take off. Thought it was surly the u-joints, but not sure after a quick check this AM - everything feels tight. Is there a common issue to look for on the 80's that may make this happen? Hoping and praying it is something easily managed.

Any ideas?

Is this a new noise?

Not sure Scott - I have just noticed it because I have been away from the truck for a while. It may have been there all along and I did not pay attention or it may have developed over the past 5K miles the truck and I have spent together. You can feel it, as well as hear it. Slight, but there...

feels tight on the truck? Pretty sure everything has to be unloaded, as in off the ground or the shaft has to be off the truck to really see any play?

is your tcase chain-driven? mine is. while its a very strong case for my application the chain can and does stretch out over time allowing for
clunks during operation.

I'd also have you check transmission/motor mounts. I had a clunk on a trip once, and it turned out to be transmission mount bolts being loose. When I took off or stopped it would clunk audibly.

I don't know about the 80 series, but the FJ62's are known for having "the clunk" Best if you check MUD. I'm sure you will find a lot of info about it.

Memory is not working to explain why. My FJ62 does it but it's not real bad so I have not really got into it.

Grease your rear driveshaft. And might as well hit every other grease port you can while under there.

The slip joint in the rear shaft will clunk when the rear end settles when stopping. It happens all the time on the 100 and 120 chassis yote's

So you come to a stop and just as your 80 halts completely, it feels exactly as if you have been hit from behind by another car!

If this is the case, you are just experiencing the dreaded Toyota Clunk!

Usually this is not a big issue. The easiest, least expensive way to deal with it is greasing the propeller shafts as often as practically possible.

I´ve dealt with it in my 60 series, my 62, my three 80 series trucks and lastly in my 200 series. In my experience, there is no reason to worry.

Yep, rear driveshaft splines. Grease builds up inside and the whole thing gets sticky. Pull the rear shaft, mark and and separate, clean out the old gunk, and grease it.

Just be sure not to go crazy when greasing the splines through the grease fitting. You can add too much and cause the shaft to hydraulically expand. This will trash your transfer case output bearings at the very least.
