I don't know fellas. I called another (different) shop just bearly. They said that all the aluminum units are commercial grade. They stopped making "recreational" shells years ago. He confirmed no way they're less than 150lbs. That's standard with no options.

I can't really believe they don't still make plain aluminum toppers. Unicover and A.R.E. both advertise them. Talking about the 1" square tubing frame with wrinkled paper-thin aluminum sheeting. I bet they don't make much money on them so it's not at the top of the sales guy's stack of cut sheets. I dunno, maybe not. The number of people willing to slap a random color topper on their $65k truck is probably dwindling.

I would love to have those doors on my Flippac.

I had a softopper. They are good for what they are. You can't lock them but I think people are less likely to steel what they can't see. Also, I wouldn't consider a fiberglass topper more bear proof.

That's pretty close to this one guy I know... except he drives a 385k mile Toyota.

Base shell's don't have those barn doors. Just the standard flip up hatch door. Still contemplating.

By the way, driving around today, I saw a Tundra with steel wheels (not the 5-spoke). Never knew they came with these. Apparently, work truck trim that isn't available anymore. Wonder what the payload is on one of those.

When I build an SR 4WD 5.7L V8 6.5 foot bed work truck it says 1,630 lbs payload. With the 4.6L V8 it goes down to 1,490 lbs.

Would it not be more so that a canvas topper?

I ask because when we camp we are told not to keep food in our tent trailer because of bears. Yet, people with hardwall's (which are made of fiberglass, i believe are okay). We don't cook in our trailer. Strictly speaking food storage...
