Cold Clutch Chatter

When the clutch is cold on my '99 2.7L Tacoma, it will chatter or "judder" (I didn't make that word up!) when I start from a dead stop. It catches and releases quickly, making the whole truck shake.

Granted, the clutch now has 150,000 miles on it, so I'm guessing the springs are crapping out. FWIW my wife's Subaru has always done this, and it's a known problem on those vehicles.

I can live with the issue, but what I'm wondering is, is the clutch about to fail? Usually a worn clutch gives you some warning, this one is not slipping and otherwise works fine.

Sounds like it could be a broken dampener spring but more likely a contaminated clutch disc. Remote possiblility that the flywheel is warped but the fact that it does it only when it's cold kinda rules that out. At 150K it doesn't owe you anything, that's for sure!

Mine does this too. Mine also has 150K on it. I didn't notice it until probably around 120K. I'm just going to replace the clutch when I get the chance.
