Coleman Colorado

I see there are two members on here who have modded Coleman Colorado pop up campers they use. Their design intrigued me, so I looked online. Came across one on ebay that low and behold is like 30 minutes from my house, at a dealer. I went and looked at it and it's in amazing shape considering it's from 1989. They were asking 900 so I offered 600, said they wouldnt sell it off ebay for less than 800. So, I'm going to try and snatch it up on ebay for cheaper hopefully. What do you guys think these are worth in really good shape?

I have big plans for it, new frame, axle, tires, wheels, and all kinds of other crazy ideas.

Go for it. I was looking for a Colorado before I decided to go the M416 route.

I think 800 is way too high. If they think it'll go for that on ebay they're smokin' somethin' illegal. 600 sounds about right!

I definitely considered the military trailer route. I think I can build this into something fairly rugged and very functional for not too muh money. I'm sure it will probably cost more to build it the way I want than I think, all builds go that way. I'm going to try to get it on ebay, I hope someone who works at the dealership isn't bidding to jack the price up though.

I had to pay $900 for mine, but its a '91.
They are all the same, but for 2 trim packages.
Mine is the sport.
Great trailer.
I put a 2000lb. axle on mine and ended up removing all but the main leaf to soften it up a little.
Shocks in the spring.
Good luck, and post some pics.

I'd be little worried that it is 76" wide

I don't know what you have for a tow vehicle but the trailer could be considerably wider than the tow vehicle.

Modifying the trailer to accept larger tires and fitting an upgraded axle and suspension is all possible. Making it narrower is a serious problem.

I have a very similar trailer out in the barn I was considering ruggedizing.

What are opinions on the chassis of these trailers? Leave as is or replace with something stronger? I was considering making a new chassis out of some 2x4 box steel I have lying around but would it be overkill?

LOL as far as Canucks go is there a such thing as over kill, lol, Y'all build some stout stuff up there. I usually build everything overkill too, so I guess I'd fit rite in up there, lol. 2x4 is way over kill for a trailer it is HD for a vehicle frame, 2x3 would be better suited for a trailer. What is the oem frame made out of?

IIRC, it is 1x3 C channel - or maybe a tough larger.

Just concerned about dragging something like that over rocks. Would really suck to have it fully loaded and coming apart 500 kms from nowhere.

I was planning on giving this one a new frame, maybe even mount the new frame under tha current c channel frame. I'd like to put in longer leaf springs, so I'd feel safer with some 2x2 tubing holding them in place. I also plan to make the fram extend further in front and behind the trailer, to serve as cargo area. I think all of these ideas add up to new frame. Shouldn't be too hard to build either. I had thoguht about using some of that very dense plastic, almost like cutting board material for a skid plate of sorts. Some of the Tacoma and 4Runner guys have done it. It basically is a very high strength plastic that slides over obstacles really well. Sharp rocks would gouge it, but it always seems like an iunteresting idea. Probably be $$$ though.

That explains why I'm always fighting to try and keep myself from overbuilding everything. It's all starting to make sense to me now!! I'm full of 100% Canuck blood.

cstamm81, good luck with the trailer procurement! :roost:

I haven't looked under mine in a while but I would be more worried about the OSB floor than the frame! Mine has been lifted for a good 10 years and dragged over some nasty stuff and still in one piece but needs some work now.

I lost out on the trailer, it went for $955!!! I could have bought it for $800 at the dealer, but I thought they had no chance of even getting that. Probably the best condition Colorado anywhere though lol.
I was a little bummed as I had all these plans for it, oh well. I wanted it to be able to make a rack that could schlep kayaks and bikes, and provide room to be able to get out of the weather when camping in the winter or rain. The Maggiolina is awesome to sleep in, but u don't exactly hang out inside of it for too long.
I bet whatever clamshell AT comes out with will be awesome, and worth the price. Just not sure if I could justify the cost. Keeping an eye out for an M416 or a used Jumping Jack though.

Have you considered to take a slide-in camper for a pickup on a trailer frame?

Quicksilver has a slide-in foldout tent canvased camper. It weighs 450#s. Here is a little write-up of what I thought of mine. I'm wanting to sell it.
