colored bulbs?

I've been wanting to replace some of my overhead light in the 4Runner with colored bulbs (red) for nighttime use. I gave a brief look at an autozone one day, but didn't see any.

Anybody have a source for them?

(I could use gels from my photography, but thought bulbs would be cleaner).

Thanks,

Jeff

I know the hella map lamps come with removable red covers. I have used these for years with great success. Reasonable too.

Are you talking about your interior bulbs, like the map lights and dome light?

yes. Actually found one for the dome to try out tonight at PepBoys. Nice red glow, LED, to replace the dome light. Will probably put another in the back cargo area too.

Nice way to have light, yet not destroy your night vision. I'll give this one a try, then decide if I want more.

Gotcha. I've bought festoon and wedge-type LED's from autolumination.com. Prices are pretty good there, and lots of variety (maybe too much).

For the smaller bulbs, Hella makes some high temp rubber "boots" that stretch over the bulb. Green, blue, and red options as I recall.

We have red lights in aviation. I would suggest multiple colors. Red, tends to be great until you need to see something that is on the red color scale. At that point I normally have to resort to white light and wait the 30 min to regain the night vision in the rods of my eyes. If another color light was available in addition to the red it would help. Just my personal experience.

That's a good point, thanks. I had planned to keep one of the map lights white just for that purpose. I think both domes red will be fine (I'll have a chance to test it on top of Mt. Graham Tuesday, just to see how truly dark or bright the red is).

I saw some cheapies at PepBoys and was suspicious of them. But, If Hella makes some, I suspect they are good (the Hella's, not the cheapies).

Found this thread as I was searching for LEDs on here... slightly off topic, but worth noting the idea of swapping your dash bulbs for LEDs also. My 82 Land Rover Lightweight's dash lights were burnt out and instead of replacing with regular bulbs I ordered these www.roverantics.com/Dash.htm.

Can't yet tell you how they look because I found out after removing the instrument panel that I also had to order a T10 Wedge Socket (bulb holder) because the LEDs are wedge shaped rather than having a traditional round base. These fit other Rovers I'm told, but not the my military one.

Took a long time to find anyone that carried the socket (found no one in the US) and instead got them for a few bucks on ebay from a seller in Hong Kong. Will wire those up and get the green LEDs installed as dash lights.

If you're looking for other colors, you can google T10 wedge and you'll get a bunch of sites (all seem to be in the UK or Far East) that sell the bulbs. Up to you know if they'll fit your dash, overhead light, etc.

Will post a pic when I get them installed...
