common machinist terms explained

i hope i didnt offend anyone or discourage people from doing their own driveway projects. i personally think its great to see people getting out there and building their own stuff.

i think alot of times people dont realize how much more goes into welding then just laying a bead. things like pre-stressing the steel, pre-heating certain material to specific temperatures for welding, pulling out heat distortion or bent material, using and air arc or a wash tip on a torch to gouge material or remove a bad weld, face hardening material, even things like reading a blueprint and knowing how to read weld symbols. which gasses and what percentages to run for the given application, knowing how to run multiple pass welds. that doesnt even include all the different machines like iron workers, presses, rollers, etc...

sorry for the rant everyone just gets to me at sometimes when people think running a weld bead is all that there is to being a welder/fabricator. i dont even bother giving advice on boards like this anymore since over 90% of the time i get told something along the lines of "thanks but i know what im doing"

No offense taken(at least on my behalf)... Like I said... I can weld, and know about preheating some materials(cast aluminum and such), but, certainly not all you mentioned...

Thats why I dont bother trying to be a professional welder...

Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.

DAMMIT TOOL:
Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling "DAMMIT" at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.
