There's also a fair number of reasonably priced used expedition campers on various websites in Europe such as www.mobile.de. On the whole it appears to me that more Europeans are into building their own expedition campers and motorhomes than Americans.

This is very true, Kerry. There are for many years specialized companies building excellent expedition vehicles in different countries in Europe. One reason for this is that people in Europe enjoy good social wellfare with several weeks of holidays a year and early generous retirement. Second reason is that with an expedition vehicle, from Europe you can go somewhere easily. Into Africa after a short ferry boat trip from Spain. Or by land all the way to China.
