Contemplating purchasing a 2011 Rubicon

Sorry in advance for the long post!:

So, I went to the Jeep dealership to test drive a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited. I've been considering the purchase of one and decided what the heck, I've got a couple hours to kill, why not see if I even like them (I'd never driven one, heck I'd never even sat in one)....

So, got to pull a good prank on my fiancee, they let me drive it home and keep it for a day, I told her: look what I bought! She was livid!!!! (she feels (rightly so) that any big financial decision should be made between us) But anyway, after I revealed that I was just pranking her, she drove it around the block and she and I both LOVE it!!!!

It seems to be a good compromise vehicle, I want an offroad toy and my fiancee wants me to get a Tahoe (which although quite nice has the offroad abilities of a station wagon). The fiancee loves the Jeep since it's an auto so she can drive it, it also has tons of nice features that we both will love for road trips.

But, it would mean getting rid of both of my current vehicles:
2007 Chevy Silverado Classic 2500 HD extended cab shortbed 4x4, Dmax/Alli with 107K miles on it. AND 1987 GMC Jimmy all brand new drivetrain 350/sm465/203205 triple stick doubler/60 front with ARB/14BFF rear with Detroit, yada yada (she can't drive it and un-affectionately nicknamed it the money pit since it has sat for 3 out of the four years that I have owned it)

I originally (back in 03) wanted my first new vehicle to be a TJ Rubicon but bought a BlaZer2 instead, then had a 69 Bronco, an 05 Civic, a 96 Grand Cherokee (that the fiancee still misses), the 07 Chevy, and the 87 GMC. I bought the fiancee a 98 Cherokee but, she had a ton of mechanical problems with it when I was away at school (think shop may have seen her as a single girl and screwed her over), traded it to her dad for an 03(?) little Infiniti I30 and still misses her Jeep which her dad LOVES! So, thinking about going full circle and buying this Jeep for me (though, she will drive it sometimes too).

I will be having about $500 a month car payment (or so) but, some of that cost is offset by no longer paying $50/month to store the car hauling trailer I bought for trailering the Jimmy (HOA won't allow trailer to be stored at home), fuel will be cheaper (JK about same mileage as Dmax BUT, gas is cheaper than diesel). Also, having only one vehicle, my insurance should stay about the same (run full coverage on the Dmax, comp on the Jimmy), and registration will be less (Dmax is $311 a year due to weighted tags, and Jimmy is about the same as the Jeep) so, some cost will be offset.

Pros:
It's a sweet Jeep that has more sweet usable features than any vehicle I have ever owned! It also fits in the garage (Dmax doesn't), it can go wheelin tomorrow (Jimmy is in pieces), the fiancee loves it and can drive it, it's practical for future kid hauling duties...

Cons:
Would no longer have a truck, the Jeep is like driving a Yugo compared to the Dmax in terms of power, I will have a payment (Dmax is paid off), I will only have one vehicle rather than two...

I can't make up my mind, I keep gazing longingly at the Jeep in my driveway BUT, do I have new car fever? Will I regret it?

For reference, it is a black on black (thought I wanted white or tan but, they had this or red in stock and the all black look is really growing on me, yes I could order one but, the fiancee is digging the color too) 2011 JKU Rubicon, with as near as I can tell every option other than leather, side airbags, and an engine block heater. It is BEAUTIFUL!!! Brand new, only 26 miles (4 of them thus far from me), it was in their showroom until they lent it to me. Only thing I don't like is their detail guy was lazy and got wax on the plastic bits, yuck! (should clean off easy enough though).

So, what do y'all think, is the Rubicon a good vehicle to buy? Thanks in advance for any opinions!!!

Wait 3-5 months and get the Pentastar engine when it comes out....

Penta-whosit? IDK, if it is an all new engine, I will want to wait for quite some time for it to be established and reliable (I don't like buying things when they first come out, don't wanna be a guinea pig). The current engine has been established for a while (hasn't it?) and seems trustworthy (though snail like sluggish).

To be honest, I have not even looked at the JKU's horsepower/torque specs, I know it's WAY slower than my Dmax (360/650 all stock) but, I don't even wanna know how slow, LOL! The JKU is the first vehicle purchase that I have contemplated where I have not been worried about engine output!

At the rate that I have racked up speeding tickets in the past, less power may be better for me! LOL!

Current underpowered engine makes 202 HP and you will hate it. It's the biggest complaint you hear from wrangler owners.

Pentastar makes 285-300 HP and gets 20% better mpg. It's worth the wait. I'm in the same boat but I'm holding on. I will be placing one on order the second I can.

Oh and the Pentastar has been out a couple years. It's the base V6 in the GRand Cherokees and also the Charger, challenger platforms.

Hmm, dang, I wish it had the Penta-star now. I really can't wait that long, I am getting married in 4 months and the fiancee has a big list of improvements she wants to make to the house right after the wedding so, I will have NO money for anything then! Gotta do what I can before the ball and chain goes around my ankle! LOL!

I think the current engine can outdrag a 3 cylinder Geo Metro (maybe) so, it's not unsafe or anything (not a traffic impediment), LOL!

Plus, I kinda dig the idea of getting a 2011 (70th anniversary of Jeep), I am obsessive compulsive when it comes to number significance, LOL!

I will say this though, if they said they were going to make the non-US spec diesel available in 3-5 months, I would wait!!!! (2012 model year and all, LOL!)

Metcalf and DrMoab,
Thanks for the info about the Pentastar engine! I just realized that I come off sounding really hard headed and stubborn in my response posts, I really don't mean to, LOL! I definitely agree the current engine needs more power!

I just really don't think I can wait due to all the plans the fiancee has, like I say, it's pretty much a case of I better get while the getting's good in terms of me buying 4x4 stuff 'cause before the wedding it's fair game but after, she has plans for our $$$!

Blackwater,
Thanks for the heads up on the Teadlightly discount. Whether I buy the Jeep tomorrow or not, I need to join Teadlightly!

I think we shall see what tomorrow holds, if they make me a good enough deal, I'll squeeze the trigger, if not, meh, I'll wait a while. Heck, at the rate I move on things, I may just end up waiting for the Pentastar if the deal isn't good enough tomorrow! (I'll just have to set aside a super secret JK fund, LOL!)

Is there anything else changing for 2012? I must admit I am not up on current Jeep model info!

Thanks for all the info y'all! Keep it coming!

Tough decision, I've had my JK for 3 years now and wouldn't trade it for anything. However, it's not my only vehicle, but it is both my off road machine and a daily driver.

The JKU is slow but the superchips flashpaq helps pep it up. Re-gearing will also make it less sluggish.

The JKU also has a very low tow rating and by adding typical mods, (bumpers, winch, sliders, racks....) you add a lot of weight and take away from what little towing capacity you have.

All that being said I love my JKU. I know it's not fast, but I can easily do 80mph on the Hwy and that's about as fast as I need to go when running 6.5" of lift and 35" tires. I know it can't tow more than a small camp trailer, but it's a Jeep and they're not meant to haul heavy loads.

I would carefully consider how much you use your truck for hauling cargo and towing, the JKU will not be able to replace those features. It will however take you pretty much wherever you want to go off road :)

I have an 04 rubi and I run in a club with a lot of New JK owners. Most of them dont complain about lack of power because once they lift and add mods they knew they would be driving slower. All of them seem very happy the rubicon owners say they would never get rid of their jeep unless it is wrecked.

I gave up an 03 supercharged mini cooper for my 04 rubi and dont regret it at all especially since I can drive anywhere on pavement and most anywhere on dirt, rocks, mud. :)

For me having no car payment would be a huge plus. 1 thing I hate about Jeeps is the lack of space to carry large things so having a truck would be great. If I was in your situation I would maybe sell the trailer, sell the second vehicle, do a month or 2 of saving (no car payments) and buy a decent Cherokee off Craigslist.

I am a former car buying addict. I have owned a 97 Tiburon (wrecked), bought a 98 4 door 4x4 garage kept Cherokee for $5k with less than 60k on it (this was years ago), traded it in a few months later for a 2005 Tiburon, traded that in after an accident on a 2 door 07' JK with 35's, traded that in on a stock 07' Rubicon, traded for a 07' Nissan Frontier and finally traded that for an 06' LJ with 14k miles. All of that and I am just now 25 yrs old. In my short time I have realized something.... I am an idiot. By now I could have had either a Cherokee or a Tiburon completely paid for and money saved to buy a decent used vehicle of the other type (1 car, 1 4x4) and be without a car payment. I have never rolled over negative equity but still... no car payment sounds great.

The PentaStar is being re-rated for the JK's with 260hp but more low end torque compared to the PentaStar in other platforms. Source = Alpars.

The existing 2.8 is tolerable, and more tolerable in the manual form compared to the auto. The '12's will help with the auto issue since the tranny behind the PentaStar will be a five speed rather than the four speed 42rfe, which has just too much jump between the 1:1 third and .67:1 OD fourth.

I'm not in the market but I would wait and then see what the price difference was between the on-the-lot '11's and the on-the-way '12's. The '11's may represent a heck of a deal.

On weight, installing an AEV suspension, say the 3.5" suspension, which is geared toward overland/exploring, will help dramatically with weight handling. In fact the AEV suspensions improve ride and handling compared to a stock Jeep. AEV will be out with a 2" spring lift soon for those wanting less lift.

The JKU Rubicon with everything stock except for an AEV 2" spring lift would be a heck of a capable Jeep for overlanding/touring/exploring/camping etc assuming the forthcoming AEV 2" spring lift is as fine a suspension as their 3.5" and 4.5" systems.

Young people always make the same mistakes.

Wait for the good engine.

Don't sell your Jimmy to finance this deal. You'll take it up the you know what trying to sell a vehicle like that. You'll end up effectively giving it away. Your wife needs to learn stick.

If you decide you can't wait for the good engine then buy used. There is no point in paying depreciation on something that is already available.
