coolant leak

Hi all, I'm trying to find out the source of coolant leak under the hood (gen 2.5 montero). I'm attaching pics, with the metal stick pointing towards the leaked coolant. Can someone point in the right direction what gasket/part need to changed to fix the leak. I always see fresh green liquid in that area.

Well, looks like it might be the o ring on the 1" water pipe that runs from the upper coolant housing all the way to the back crossover pipe. Otherwise it could be the little 1/4" hoses that route to each of the front part of the cylinder heads, but if it's these, you may want to consider all new water pump, belt, tensioner, as this all needs to be removed to access these hoses.

I've got the same leak. I bought both the large elbow pipe and the smaller pipe with o-rings to do the job. Is it really necessary to remove the whole front end off the engine? I thought it could all be accessed from above by removing the plenum and lower intake.

Nope. You need to remove the waterpump and therefore the timing belt etc.... The tube runs from the back of the water pump to the back of the engine. Taking the intake & plenum off will not get you anywhere.

Bummer. I was hoping I wouldn't have to mess with the timing belt.

Actually, the 1" and o rings can be changed by removing the plenum, but, the pipe that runs in the valley of the engine to the water pump which also has an o ring needs to be fully disassembled. If the o ring towards the front of the engine on that 1" water pipe is the culprit, you only need to remove that top housing (the part the top radiator hose is attached to). That one should only be a 30 minute job. Every other scenario, will result into a good part of a day to do.

Damn, this is big.... guess it will be a summer project. Have a big trip coming up next week, will just carry a gallon of coolant and top off.

PAJ, can you give a quick synopsis of how to access the small pipe that runs in the valley? I'm planning on accessing it from above and rear of the engine. Thanks.

I've had to replace the hose near your pointer stick due to a small weaping leak. I did it without removing anything major but it was like doing surgery. If it's not that, you might have a leaking intake manifold gasket. In my case I leaked coolant around the manifold compression washers, one of which is also right by your pointer. I've had both of these types of leaks in that same spot, but without using dye and UV light they might be hard to tell apart. Also in your picture I notice the lower hose clamp is a screw style. I recommend the constant tension style (what Mitsubishi put on there stock) especially for that location. On lines that small, the screw style never seems to get tight enough or stay tight, and over tightening can tear or distort the hose.

Thanks, Salonika indeed I do need to put in a dye as I still don't have any idea where it's coming from. Also good tip on the clamp, will do that.

BEG, the intake plenum, upper / lower, intake manifold and injectors, should see the smaller waterpipe at that point. Not much on the back side of the engine to do but there is a couple 12mm bolts that secure the water pipe down, those will need to be removed, this will be the worst part.

Thanks. That's about what I suspected. I'll be doing the VC gaskets as well so the covers will be off, which might gain me a bit more clearance back there.
