Cooper Discoverer A/T3 Tires for Death Valley Racetrack?

Just along for the ride
If you are worried about punctures, pick up a tire with 3 ply sidewalls. But pretty much any LT application will offer good puncture resistance. The AT3 is a great tire that offers good puncture resistance, but has a 2 ply sidewall. The ST Maxx is a 3 ply and very puncture resistant. My recommendation would be to get the tire best suited for the majority of the driving you do. For me, that would be the AT3, and it is at the top of my list for my next set of tires. But I don't do a ton of wheeling (sadly) so even though I REALLY want the ST Maxx's, it's not the best tire for me.

I ran up to the Yukon this summer in a heavily loaded Astro van on AT3s in a weenie little lt235/75/15 flavour . Did lots of back roads and a chunk of the Dempster Hwy with no problems at all. Make sure you have a full sized spare or two if you are real worried and you should be fine .

I destroyed AT3 on racetrack road. :( It was partially my fault that time though....

That said AT3 have let down few times, where they shouldn't. Discoverer AT3 also have weak sidewalls (something I read, but ignored before bought those tires). Wouldn't recommend.

Now I have BFG TA KO2 (new version of TA KO) and so far they have been holding up great. Also I love the protection of sidewall and to my surprise they don't generate more noise than AT3.

I used to know a back country ranger that worked in Death Valley for a few years (even got to go with him on a unofficial "ride along" with him out to the Racetrack and up over whatever pass is nearest Racetrack valley (can't remember as it was quite a few years ago and I have not been back since). It was Spring Break and it was close to 90deg F in Badwater, but they had a couple inches of snow up on the mountains - very beautiful. He stated that the biggest problem was people driving out there with street tires and getting punctures with no spare, or unable to change spare, or no tire repair kit. The other big problems were people getting lost, or running out of gas and/or water. People also complained about no cell coverage???? Now I am sure he was speaking about the typical tourist. Make sure you have at least one spare and the ability to fix a flat (repair kit + compressor). As always Be prepared and drive smart.
