Cooper ST Maxx vs AT3

Care to elaborate more on the "best performing 'off road' tire on pavement that you've ever owned"? Like which tires have you owned and how does the Maxx perform better?

The last were STT's
Before that were deffinity in the A/T design and our explorer has duratac's
I don't recall what the work trucks had where i worked unfortunately.
My F-250 spends lots of time on two lane paved roads in the mountains and Maxx's are well mannered and predictable cornering and braking on wet or dry pavement, they also handle a load well truck weighs in at 8,000# empty and i run 55 psi front and 50 psi rear that is in load range E 295-70 17's on 8" wide rims. they behave more like a street tire than the others I've driven.

I have not been happy with the sidewalls on my AT/3's. Too thin and I have had a lot of wear where the outer black has been worn through and white shows up. Otherwise the tires have been great. 42,000 miles on them and still plenty of tread left so they are holding up to expectations in that department. My next tires will be the STT Pros which have a thicker sidewall.

Thanks for the input. The sidewalls on the AT3 is my biggest concern. Thats why I was looking into the ST Maxx in the first place.

yup.

The tire impressed me otherwise, but I'm really disappointed with their strength. I'll be going back to BFG when these wear out, the new KO2s seem very impressive.

According to what I've been reading, the New BFGs are a lot better than the old ones and for the most part people seem to be happy with their performance, especially off road. Just curious, why you will be getting the new BFGs instead of the Maxx?

My old BFG ATs were my favorite tire, save for the sidewall. I don't feel that Cooper has the "community" that BFG does... I contacted Cooper just looking for something after blowing two sidewalls. Even just a discount or voucher on a road hazard warranty but all they had to say was "Sorry, you should have bought a tire with the ArmorTek3 sidewall." Are they wrong? No, but BFG is a larger company with more focus on the enthusiast. All you have to do is look at their social media presence to see that.

edit: also, I beat the snot out of my BFG AT KO1s. Only busted one sidewall and it was a slow leak, but they were destroyed by 35k miles. Looked like crap, but still held air and had another 10k of road use on them. Sold them cheap when I went to 33s. I'm very easy on the AT3s (albeit with a heavier vehicle, but these are also LR E whereas the BFGs were LR C) and the sidewalls looks like they had a pretty hard life. Tread is like iron though, 20k on them now and I'm probably only 20% worn there.

AT3/K02 is a better daily driving tire...lighter, better mpg, better siping, probably better in snow.

The ST Maxx is a great tire and compared to the DuraTrac for instance is a lot quieter. I went with the ST Maxx purely because I could get a 255/75/17C load tire in a 3ply. Tires are always a struggle...but realistically the AT like the AT3 will work for the majority of us in the USA.

But for someone like me who only puts 5000 miles a year on my Jeep the ST Maxx is perfect...

I am looking at that exact tire size for me, but the actual size on the Cooper website are not what a 255 75 17 usually run. I am worried about them being too big. Do you know if your tires were the size that Cooper said they would be?

I've run Toyo MTs, ATs, AT IIs, M55s, BFG MTs, ATs, Rugged Trails, General Gabber APs, ******** Cepek FC IIs, Micky Thompson MTZs, and am now on Cooper ST Maxxs. Toyo MTs are my all around favorites, but so far (I've only got 5,000 on the STs) the Coopers are impressing me. They are super quiet on the highway, and have awesome rain and snow grip. If they last more than 30,000 I'll be a happy camper!

Real world expedition with the AT3's

Sorry to repeat myself but here is my re post about this tire; ( I have never owned a set of ST Maxx's so...)

I put a set on my 03 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 loaded with a camper body. ( 6500-7000lbs.) 245/75/16 E. I drove from N. California down thru Mexico, Central and around South America and back thru Florida to California (25,000mi.) and these tires did not get any flats. In addition the ride quality and tire noise was normal, traction was great in rain, mud, dirt, and gravel. I have not driven them in snow or on ice. In Argentina I cracked one of the rims causing one of the tires to go flat, when I had it remounted on to one of the spare rims it was undamaged. These are tough tires, a great value, and made in USA. The tires look like they still have another 15-20k left on them. I plan on buying these exact tires for my w250 / Sunrader project when completed. Make sure you check online, there are great deals on this tire with free delivery.

Safe travels,

Safe travels,

Although I have only put around 7k miles on my AT3's they have been pretty hard miles while towing the Jeep or boat or being driven on hunting trails that are 60% sharp rocks, the truck only leaves the driveway if it is being used as a truck and the tires have been great.

If you are looking at the AT3 I'd also check out the Hankook ATM. I've used both and while they are very similar I (slightly) preferred the Hankooks in all areas. As a bonus they are usually a little cheaper in most sizes. I just put a set of Hankook ATM p265/75r16's on my JKU and they are silent in the road. They also cost just $377 delivered from Discount tire with rebates.

thanks, but I've pretty much settled on the Cooper Tires after my research.

I bought LT255/80/R17 Load Range E ST Maxx's a few months ago, very happy with them. I have 6k miles on them, so far so good. I tend to run my jeep at it's max GVWR when loaded for camping and air down to 15-25 psi depending on the terrain and the speed of travel.

I bought for $197/tire at Town Fair Tire. With tax and install I was at $226/tire. I did all 5 and rotate them every 5000 when I change the oil.

Here's the decision thread I started...

Everyone seems to be having good luck with the ST Maxx's plus Cooper supports American jobs.
I agree. I haven't really read anything bad about them online while researching them. Except, that there were issues with the beads cracking and splitting and the the biggest complaint is that they are heavy compared to other AT's.
