Cooper STT 11,000 mile report

Cooper STT 32x11.5x15 on a Tacoma Xcab with high GVW.

You can read my initial review HERE.

So far I have 11,000 miles on them. They are wearing evenly. I have rotated them once so far. The sidewalls and treads have held up really well considering the abuse I have subjected them to. No major chunking or loss of lugs. I just checked and am surprised to find out that with 11,000 miles, the current tread depth is at 12/32" (67% of usable). At this rate, the tires will wear out before I get 20,000 miles on them. And considering that I usually replace tires at 50%, they may only see a few more thousand miles on my truck. Granted, the percentage of miles in the dirt and in 4wd for my truck is very high (no daily commutes and lots of overland trips) but that is pretty dissapointing and will make this a very expensive set of tires.

So my opinion as of today - is that they are awesome tires if you can afford the short lifespan :)

Unfortunately that is my general experience with Cooper tires, both name brand and private label. They are awesome tires, but the long term cost is quite high due to the short life. I think that is the cost of their great grip.

I have found the same thing with mine even though they are on a lightweight!

Wait until the get to around 50% the howl will drive you nuts. I like the tires and they do great off road but I will be switching back to BFG for my next set(33x9.50 AT's)

What percent/mileage are you at? Any idea? I'm just curious.

I haven't measured but I would say I'm getting close to 50%. Too much road driving! (120 kms per day!) :(

Chris;
What tire are you considering next? I think I have decided on my next tires: Toyo Open Country Mud Terrain (285/75-16, load range E). The tread pattern is VERY similar to the Cooper STT, but the reports I am reading rate this tire highly for tread wear and noise considering it is a M/T.

I am very impressed with Chris' tires. They are a soft durometer than standard mt's and the lugs deflect nicely and show only light smearing (no tearing). They gripped well on the snow too, with strong resistance to lateral slide.

They are reasonably quite too and balanced great (much better than his previous MTR's or my MT's).

IMO they are worth replacing sooner to get that performance, but none of the downside's of the MTR's.

Yes, I tend to agree with Scott. The Toyo's appeal to me as well, but I plan to find out what their wear figures are before deciding. I am waiting to see what BajaXplorer says on his treadwear. He has the Toyos and thinks they are probably wearing quite quickly as well.

Hey guys, i run Coopers as well at the moment, i'm not that impressed with the STTs, they are cracking at the bottom of the lugs and wearing far more rapidly than i expected, after getting firstly a set of STs then the newer ST-Cs replaced under warrenty i won't be getting Coopers again.

Got my eye on the Silverstone MT117s:elkgrin:

I have heard similar comments from several Aussie friends, all of them swear they will not use Coopers again. My friend in Sydney has had a blowout and tread seperation issues with newer Cooper tires. This is enough to make me look for other alteratives.

Chris,

You did have Goodyear MTRs on before, from what I read you weren't too happy with them.

I just switch to the MTRs this past summer from being a long time BFG guy.

So far I am very happy with the Goodyears, lower noise, smoother ride, way better traction. I do rotate my tires every 5000 miles, (every other oil change). Goodyear did change the compound on the newer ones...at least that is what I was told by the tire guy.

How many miles did you get out of yours?
