Cooper STT, Wrangler MT/R, maybe something else?

I need to pull the trigger on new tires very soon as my current set is far too worn to be of any use. I'm wanting a mud-oriented tire since most of my off road driving is dirt, mud, wooded areas, etc. Since my Montero is also my daily driver I want a tire that will go the distance as well. The dealer I go through has Cooper and Goodyear, so the STT and MT/R are two tires I am looking closely at. Reviews seem positive for both but I can't find solid intel on treadlife. Anyone have experience they can share?

I've STTs on my pajero, they seem to be wearing pretty OK, but I don't do big milage. They're not a great performer in mud, you've to have a heavy foot to clear them. The road noise off them isn't too bad and they're good in the wet, I'd rate them somewhere between an MT and an AT in terms of offroading performance

I'm not a big fan of Cooper or Goodyear or Goodrich for this type of tire, but it's been a long time since I've had any Coopers or Goodyears. I would lean toward Toyo or Nitto, in that order. My trucks are currently running Toyo AT2 and Nitto Trail Grappler G2, both quiet and seem to be long wearing. Last set was Toyo MTs and they were great in every respect except for a rather high price, but worth it. I'm going back to MTs when my AT2s wear out, but that will be a while.

The Toyo MT is another one my dealer carries, as well as the Hankook MT. They're both a little more than I wanted to spend but I'm putting these tires on the ol' credit card anyway so it is what it is. My biggest two requirements are long treadlife and performance off road, particularly in mud.

I had Goodyear MT/Rs on mine a couple years ago.

Initial impressions were superb, they were quieter than I remember the previous set of BFG MT KM(1) tires being when they were new, and they had a good rugged appearance to them. They were also true-to-size unlike a lot of tires out there (maybe a slight hair bigger even).
Offroad they did nearly everything I needed of them.
After 12K miles, they were down to about 70% tread left, which is considerably faster wear than what I experienced with the BFGs (the BFGs had 33K miles and 50% tread left on them when I replaced them with the MT/Rs).

Alas, I had to get rid of my MT/Rs at that 12K mark because they were vibrating horrendously on the freeway.
For some reason all 4 tires had become anywhere from 1/8" to 3/16" out of round, and so couldn't be balanced to ride smooth anymore. Perhaps mine came from a bad batch? I dunno... However it was not my first bad experience with poor QC on Goodyear tires (at least they were good about warrantying them). So now I'm back on a set of BFGs again (this time the KM2s, which are a full half-inch short of claimed size, and are much louder than both the Goodyear and the BFG KM(1).

I would definitely recommend go with Toyos if they have the size you want. Everything I read and hear about them says to me they are a great value, even in spite of the price tag.
I had seriously considered Toyo MTs for mine, but their 35" size tires are abnormally wide, and likely wouldn't fit on my wheels well. I'm still eying them for another one of my rides though, which they do make in the size I need for it.

The STT is going away to be replaced by the STT Pro. Initial reviews on the Pro are good, but it's only been out for 3 weeks.

IMHO, the tread pattern on the STT is identical to the pattern on the Toyo MT. Both are popular in AK and we have plenty of mud to deal with.

I have been very pleased with the STT on my 03 Wrangler. My current set of STT's replaced two previous sets of MT/R's (non Kevlar) and I think they are a far superior tire. I have put 49k miles on the STT and am at 7/32's with a 5 tire rotation every 5k miles.

Tire tires do great on pavement and off.

A year ago today I put the Cooper Discoverer STT on my Jeep and I really could not be happier.
Tons of tread left. With over 20k miles on them and they are still at 16mm of tread depth. Have only lost one out of the 5 to trail damage (compare to 3 Goodyear MTRKs in half the time) Hands down the best off road tire I've ever run.

I'd say this (although no real mileage under mine) the Cooper's I put on the Power Wagon have suffered zero cuts, chunks, etc. that my previous BFG AT's and KM2's suffered after running the same terrain (steep, rocky, loose hills). They seem very tough.

Glad to hear it. Been looking at these for a while now. This year I'll be buying some in 37" for my JK.
