CRD Grand Cherokee Real World MPGs

We're looking at a 2008 diesel 4wd GC, in part because of the potential increased fuel efficiency. What are you guys getting in your GCs? We'd be coming from a Tacoma currently averaging 18.8 MPGs over its lifetime.

Hey there....I have had a 2008 CRD since new.....I have a build thread on here for more info.

Real world with the CRD has been good. From a reliability standpoint it has been great. Fuel economy has been a little bit of a let down though.

If you are running empty you will see 22-24 on the hwy. Purely city will be in the high teens.

4x4, brick design, and a 5 speed tranny all hinder the potential of this engine.

For example...I have a 2010 ML350 Bluetec with the same V6 engine.....I see 25+ mpg on that engine. Better aero, different 4wd system and 7 speed.

But...from an offroad standpoint almost 400lb ft of torque is unbeatable. If you do get one try to find one with QD2 or QT2. Both 4x4 systems are great...both offer a dedicated 4lo....the QD2 has fr/rr electronic locking diffs. QT2 uses a brake system. QT allows you to add a rear locker.

MPG

I have had mine for a few months now. It's an 07 4x4 Limited. Started a thread about my mileage based on what I expected out of it when I bought it. You can find that here if you'd like to read it:

I have not reported back on the thread, but basically my average is not as good as Scootr29 gets. I get 17.8 usually and 20.2 was my best hand calculated MPG. There are some companies who do ECU tunes that supposedly get better MPG with improved torque and HP, but I have not been fully convinced by any to justify the expense.

Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention the EVIC reads between 15.8-16 MPG as average.

The real comparison should be between the diesel Grand and the Grand with gas 5.7L V8. These engines produce similar torque, and the diesel is considerably more fuel efficient, about 25% better using the EPA figures.

I expect the 2013 Grand Cherokee with Fiat V6 diesel to be more fuel efficient than the 2007-2008 Grand with Mercedes diesel. The new body style is more aerodynamic, and the 2013 has an 8 speed transmission.

Agreed. However there are people who claim 19-20 highway MPG on the Hemi as well. I can't speak for their driving style. What I quote are real world in the sense of normal driving too. I do not drive 50 MPH on the highway, but more like 70. If I drove at that speed, I am sure I would get low 20s.

I am sure it will be, though the HP/TQ numbers are similar to the Benz. The tranny itself will make a huge difference.
